How to make employees feel valued

Gaining the loyalty of your employees is done by making them feel valued. Having a good employment relationship builds trust and value to the job. When employees feel respected, they perform better and respect their bosses and the company in return.

So how can you gain the respect and trust of your employees? Here are a few tips from other companies:

-

  • Be ready to listen to the employee's questions and concerns about the job.

  • - Treat your employees with respect, not as inferior people.

  • - Be polite to your employees.

  • - Recognize and reward your employees for a job well done.

  • Ask for your employees' input in making decisions that affect their work.
  • - Gradually build trust in your employees by giving them additional responsibility or extra latitude in making decisions.
  • - Treat all your employees fairly and impartially.
  • - Be firm, but not tyrannical, when making decisions and disciplining employees.
  • - Apologize or admit to employees when you were wrong.
  • - Give employees credit where due.
  • - Express genuine concern for employees' problems.
  • - Keep your employees informed about work-related matters.
When you value employees they know it. Employees know when they are being treated fairly and know when you care about them. This not only builds trust, but it inspires them to work harder on the quality of their work. Most anyone will tell you they like to have their accomplishments recognized by others. Allowing your companies to share the success stories of employees also makes it meaningful. It shows your employees you care about them when they do a good job and you don't just see them when they are underachieving.

As a manager you should always make an extra effort just to stop by your employee's desk and compliment them and thank them for their hard work. If you value your employees in this small manner, it will not go unnoticed by them. It not only increases your employee's self-esteem, but it motivates them and they go home telling people how great their job is.

Every company should have a "reward" program in place. Working on the employment relationship can be done by simple steps. Think of what behaviors you want to recognize and what you would like to give as a reward. Perhaps your company can do a monthly drawing for those employees with the least errors or something similar. The last step is how you would like to present the reward to the employee. Usually giving it to the employee in front of their co-workers builds their self-esteem and also makes the other employees respect them for their hard work and accomplishment.

Having a staff meeting where your employees can fill out anonymous surveys is also a great benefit. You can get their feelings on how they are treated and what can be improved. Do they wish your management contributions were better? Would they like more input on decisions? Having this anonymous survey doesn't make the employee's feel pressure that they will have negative reaction taken for voicing their opinion.

Most companies would like to build an employment relationship. They want to do the right thing and have trust and respect go both ways. Being up front with your employees show them that you want what is best for them. Your employees will not feel betrayed when large decisions are made without the general office feeling about it. Taking the time to invest in the employment relationship will go a long way! Everyone will be excited to come to work in an environment where they feel valued. The trust and respect of your employees is such an accomplishment in building a successful company.
