Learning To Communicate And Listen To Your Staff
As a manager, you should articulate your instructions and expectations to your employees. They will listen to you if you make yourself clear. Instructions are very important. They give your team the guidance and direction that they need to start and complete an activity. A meeting may be a good place to give instructions to your team. Another way to give instructions is to meet with each team member individually or communicate to them via email. You often do not have time every day to meet with every single employee so the email format is a very good idea. Listen to your employees. After you give them instructions, give them the opportunity to ask questions. Questions are very important in the communication process. Through a question, you might be able to ascertain your team's concerns. A question may be a veiled concern about the details of a certain project or activity that you are assigning a team. Always listen to your team. This will give them the chance to give you good feedback. Effective communication is not an instant gift. It is something that is learned over time. Good team members are open to communication if they feel they are being listened to. Make sure that when you are answering an employee question that you restate the question so that they can confirm that you understand. Then, give the best answer that you can. If you cannot give an adequate answer, do not avoid the question. This will make you look very aloof to your team. Simply tell them that you are not equipped to answer the question. Try and find an answer for your team. Good communication skills are necessary and required for a productive staffing environment. Your staff is your team. It is a great thing if you can treat all of your team with the same amount of respect by just listening to them. Good listening is the start of good communication. When you listen, you will find that you are able to communicate with your team members in a more effective manner. Giving instructions will become simpler because you will be able to figure out what members of your team will have concerns and questions with. Good communication requires an open door if you are separated from your team in an office. Sometimes, a team member will have to come into your office to discuss a situation. It is okay to close the door at this time to have complete confidentiality. When you communicate with your team, also make sure that you set standards and do not deviate from them. If your company staff knows that you are a straight arrow in your expectations, they will not expect you to cut any slack. This is another important means of communicating with your team members. This silent communication of understanding is another way that managers can communicate with their team members. Communication isn't rocket science. It's an art form of respect and finesse. When you establish a good working relationship with your staff through listening, good communication will follow to enhance the performance and efforts of your office staff. |
