Accountancy Recruitment - Where to Find the Best Staff

Your accounting staff will undoubtedly be a vital part of your business. The duties of your accounting staff will be varied and include:

a. Bill payment. The accounting staff will generally prepare you cash disbursement checks where required
b. Record receipts. In addition to keeping track of your receipts, they will prepare bank deposits and input credits
c. Payroll. Accounting will also compute and prepare your company's payroll checks as well as payroll tax deposits
d. Analysis and review of quarterly financial results
e. Tax preparation, such as W2s and 1099s, W3 and state reconciliations, and prepare and review federal and state corporate tax returns

The handling of your business funds requires expert care and knowledge, so it's important to hire qualified, competent (as well as honest) staff members for your business.

Where to Find the Best Staff

When looking to staff your accounting department, you have a number of options. These include:
a. Placement firms. Recruitment firms typically specialize in placing highly qualified candidates in all areas. There are placement firms specifically for accounting staff. Employers who opt for accounting staff from a placement firm will have the peace of mind of knowing the employees have already been evaluated and their skills verified.
b. Temp-to-hire agencies. Temp agencies are another option for accounting staff. There are a number of advantages to this; instead of going through an interview and selection process, you need only call the agency and tell them the kind of candidate you're looking for. The temp status allows you to end the temp employees' employment with your company at any time. In addition, you need only pay the temp agency for their services, and they in turn pay the temps a portion of that. If you choose to hire a temp permanently, however, it can become expensive. Temp agencies charge for "taking" their employee away from them, usually a flat rate or a one-time fee that is a percentage of the starting employee's salary.
c. Trade magazines. Advertising in trade magazines is an excellent way to find staff. The people who typically read these publications are serious about their careers and are interested enough in the industry to read up on it.
d. Online postings. Many employees nowadays search for jobs exclusively on the internet, so more and more employers are posting their job descriptions and openings on sites such as Monster or Careerbuilder. Posting a job on these sites typically charges a fee to run the posting for a specified length of time.
e. Schools. If you're searching for entry-level positions, it's not a bad idea to enter a career fair or post job openings for new grads in career placement centers on college campuses.

Attracting Quality Staff

Since the main way you will be attracting people to your openings are through written advertisements for staff (unless you opt for a recruitment or temp agency), your ad should be well-written and specifically spell out the requirements for the job, including years of experience, certifications, and skills needed to be successful. In addition, it should also detail starting salary and benefits.

Once you begin the interview process, make sure you follow up on all references and verify all jobs, education, and certifications the potential employee lists on the application.
Finding the best staff for your accounting department is an important investment of time and money. There are many avenues you can explore to finding motivated staff, from newspaper ads to staffing agencies.
