Cash Flow Top Ten List! Are good relationships the result of good cash flow? It certainly is easier to be nice to people when money is not a problem! However, since good cash flow can be influenced by good relationships, check out this Top Ten List of People who may or may not have influenced your cash flow by what they taught you. Did you learn the lessons? 10. The Person Who Taught You to Save Who was the one in your family who always had a little extra when you had none? Sometimes a sibling can be the teacher of savings by always having enough money, and sharing with large interest payments! 9. The Person Who Said, "No!" Most parents try to teach children the value of delaying gratification. Many fail because they can't wait to give! Often the "No!" lessons are taught by athletic coaches and music teachers. Who tried to teach you "No!"??
My Dad tried to teach me the fun of waiting by taking me fishing. He also tried to teach me that it is more fun to wait until cash is in hand to make that "important purchase."
7. The Person Who Taught You to Give Generously My Sunday School teachers tried to teach me generosity. My Dad was a Methodist minister, so I witnessed the results of both generosity and stinginess.
When my brother was in banking, he covered more than one check with my first checking account in college! Bankers do have a way of teaching accounting which can be an expensive lesson for those on their own.
Do you remember the first visit you had with a life insurance agent? Wow! Or do you remember the first time you were asked, "Which would you rather have -- a $100,000 right now or a penny doubled each day for a month?"
My Dad was never in debt for long. He must have taught me this concept. I wonder why I didn't learn it?
I remember the first time I received a bonus of a couple thousand dollars back in the 70's. I think I ended up borrowing $500 to cover my lack of planning!
My Dad often told me about a con artist at a carnival who took him for about $15 in dimes while trying to win a stuffed animal. A dime seemed like such a small investment at the time. How could you lose?
My son once went on a several day youth group trip with $5.00 in his pocket and had change left over. Most everyone else had ten times that or more. He seemed to have as much fun as the rest of the kids. Had I known ahead of time, I would have given him more money, but doubt I would have contributed to his adventure. If you are like me, you do not practice every good lesson you were taught. The good news is you were probably taught all of the above lessons about cash flow. There is always more to learn, but you have a good start. The goal is to put the good lessons into practice and thank the people who first taught you about cash flow. by Carwin Dover, Relationship Coach (c)2000, Carwin Dover Excerpt from Intentional Partnerships Newsletter, "Lutheran Coffee Break!"
