The Costs Of Obesity In The Workplace

backpain_26419151.jpg
Obesity in the workplace affects several things that ultimately affect the business' bottom line.Because of obesity's link to a multitude of health problems including diabetes, stroke and the number one killer in America - heart disease, the number of people who are affected by obesity in a specific workplace can cause health insurance premiums to increase, especially when one or more person starts making claims against the insurance.Obesity may require that the company make certain accommodations so that the person is capable of doing his or her job with a minimum of discomfort, and it can affect that person's self-esteem and energy, which are important into today's fast paced, ever-changing world.
Health insurance premiums have increased dramatically over the last ten years, and every year brings a new increase that companies and employees cannot afford.Yet, the consequences of not having health insurance are so horrible that to be without it is akin to sentencing someone to bankruptcy and inferior medical care.No matter how many complaints there are against the insurance companies and the way they do business, having insurance is still better than the alternative when it comes to needing medical care.

Mental And Behavioral Health Benefits

businessowner_20240459.jpg
Mental and behavioral health benefits can help a company save money with the retention of valuable employees. Some estimates put the cost of replacing an employee at one year's salary. When an employee leaves a company, he or she takes away the relationships that have been built with key customers. This means that when the employee leaves, the business can expect to lose customers based on loyalty to that employee.Lost customers equal lost revenue! The employee also takes away the expertise that he or she has built in the job while with the company. That means that the company must train someone else and that person must learn not just how to do the job, but how to do the job right.Efficiency can only come after learning what to do, and innovation to do it better comes after that.

How To Manage Mental Health In The Workplace

businessmtg_2365008.jpg
With work weeks getting longer as companies try to do more with fewer employees and paychecks being strained by inflation and actual decreases while bills pile up, it is important for businesses to know how to manage mental health in the work place.Unfortunately, when companies look at employees as a commodity instead of as human beings, they miss the quintessential point about people. We are not machines, but even machines that are exposed to the same stress day after day wear down.Parts have to be replaced, joints have to be oiled and maintenance must be done. So even looking at people as replaceable parts, businesses miss the opportunities to provide the correct maintenance to allow their investment in people to pay off over a longer term.

How Can An Internal Risk Manager Help Your Office?

businessmeeting30396676.jpg
Risk management is more than just what a company does to limit its risks when it comes to lawsuits. It is also managing risks that may have a positive outcome like investing and managing those things that may cause a business to fail like natural or manmade disasters.By having a plan in place, a company is able to take advantage of those risks that may lead to better days and mitigate those risks that may cause problems. Many businesses will farm their risk management out to a company that specializes in risk management. That makes sense when a company does not have the resources or expertise to provide its own risk management.
Because of the multitude of things that are part of risk management, a company that is outsourced to do the job may not be providing all of the services that would help a business become more profitable and take the right kind of risks.Often times, the risk management company provides a list of rules that the business can check off when they fire someone or when they run into a legal question. There may be more support in the way of being able to contact the risk management company to ask questions, but again those questions are usually related to mitigating the dangers that a risk may impose.

Dealing With Recurring Illness In The Workplace

businessmeeting33030005.jpg
Dealing with recurring illness in the workplace can be a tricky proposition for any company.Cut the person affected and replace them with someone else too soon, and the company risks making employees feel like an unvalued commodity.Cut them too late and the company may risk damage to the bottom line. When the person is a top performer, it is even harder to decide when to release the person.Much like Shaquille O'Neal or Michael Jordan, even at 60 percent, they were better than most of the players in the NBA.If the person who suffers from the recurring illness is in their category, the company has a tough decision to make because it sets up a precedent for later down the road when a marginal performer gets a recurring disease.

Breastfeeding in the workplace should not even be a discussion topic anymore.Aside from the American image of breasts and its uptight, Puritan ideals that are somehow entirely misplaced and miss the point, there is no correct reason for creating an atmosphere that is hostile or that rejects breastfeeding anywhere including the workplace.
Breast milk is the single most important and the healthiest food that any infant and child through the age of two can ingest. There is no concern with contamination or lack of nutrients, and it even provides much needed protections from diseases that cannot be found in any other nutrition source.Breastfeeding not only protects the child, studies have shown that it also provides the mother with protection from certain diseases.A company that allows mothers to breastfeed their children at work is saying that it values its employees. Their children and the health of everyone involved.

When your workplace encourages healthy living and provides a convenient time and place for fitness, nutrition, and stress management, it doesn't just affect you, but your family as well. When dad or mom is taking care of themselves, they can take better care of their family.

Top Health Risks and Your Bottom Line

discussion8075165.jpgThere are three health risks that your employees face as they work every day that can notably affect your profit margin when they are not addressed properly. Those health risks are obesity, tobacco use, and stress related problems such as depression. Not only do they directly affect the employees afflicted, but they can also provoke indirect issues related to healthcare and productivity as well as affecting your other employees and your business overall.

These top health risks are also the hardest to address in a workplace wellness program. Weight loss and smoking cessation require behavioral modification and require that the program be tailored to the individual. Stress related illness and problems are dealt with both physically and mentally and as such require professional training to help your employees overcome. When you are in the beginning phases of implementing a workplace wellness program, realize that you will have to deal with these top health risks first.

By offering health insurance to employees employers can hold onto good employees because of the cheaper rate at which employers can get a health insurance plan. Another benefit of offering health insurance is that the money a business pays for health insurance is a tax deduction so it can lower the amount of taxes that a business owes.

Having a nurse on staff

nurseoncomputer16358479.jpg
In the past you used to see schools that had a school nurse on staff, and it is from this tradition that some employers have come up with the idea of having a nurse on staff at their places of employment. The reason for this is that if your business had a nurse on staff, somebody who knew about various medical conditions that could affect your staff, you as a business owner would not be faced with trying to figure out if your employees are really sick or if they are just pretending to be sick so they can go home for the day. Having a nurse on staff would allow you to let the nurse decide for you if somebody was too sick to be at work or if they were just looking for some kind of an excuse to get out of working. This would be a huge benefit to your place of business because it would mean that fewer people would be trying to take advantage of the sick policy or even paid sick days. However, having a nurse on staff might persuade your company to adopt some kind of sick policy so that employees would quit coming into work when they are sick.

How much maternity leave should you offer?

birth37468837.jpg
As a business, you have two options available to you for maternity leave. The first choice is you can provide only the basic minimums required by law (Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993). The second choice is to provide a paid maternity leave option. Whether you choose the first or the second, the length of time you provide off work can vary.

In an unpaid maternity leave situation, the law requires that an employee can claim up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave with job protection. Under these guidelines there are strict rules and mandates that apply. As a business you can choose to cap your maternity leave at that full twelve weeks or you can increase it to a length of time suitable to you. Remember, the law requires job protection for those 12 weeks. Job protection means that you as an employee are guaranteed your job back or one that is equal in pay, responsibilities, and benefits. As a company you can choose to then allow your employees to take additional weeks off without pay and continue job protection or you may not.

Employees with low blood glucose

cotton31966292.jpg
People that have low blood glucose often have a condition known as Hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia occurs if the glucose (blood sugar) levels drop below normal. Glucose is essential for the body because it converts into energy. Hypoglycemia is dangerous for people that are unaware that they have it. One minute, they can be completely fine and suddenly their glucose level drops and they are experiencing dizziness, fatigue, sweating, shakiness, confusion, weakness, anxiety, nervousness, hunger, and difficulty speaking. Some people can even lose consciousness because their glucose level dropped too low.

Employers that have employees with low blood glucose need to be aware of this. They need to have some foods ready in case that employee experiences a sudden drop of low blood glucose. Hypoglycemia can be treated quickly by drinking or eating something that is full of glucose. A candy bar, a regular soda, or 4 lifesavers can restore someone's glucose level back to normal. Individuals that have hypoglycemia should always carry some foods with them that can stabilize their blood glucose if it suddenly drops.

What happens if this person is overweight? Even though we live in a society that teaches us to overlook small things like this, there is no getting around that fact that discrimination may occur. You can hope that your employees will overlook the weight issue and respect this person for who they are, but it is common for other people to give them the cold shoulder. So what do you do? Is it time to hold individual meetings with everyone and find out why they are not including the new employee? Should you talk to the new employee and ask them how they feel about their co-workers? It would be nice for everyone to get over it and see the error of their own ways, but production doesn't have time to wait for people to sort through their feelings.

Common workplace injuries

injured19300229.jpg
Sprains are one of the most common workplace injuries. People often trip over wet floors and sprain their ankle. Others are simply trying to lift heavy objects without using proper mechanics and they sprain or strain a muscle. Workplace injuries cause employers to lose a lot of money. First they have to pay for sick leave for the employee, and then they have to pay for workers compensation insurance. If the employee was severely injured, they may have additional costs (legal fees) to pay for.

There are a variety of reasons why workplace injuries occur. Most workplace injuries are caused by carelessness from the employee. Either they didn't read the workplace injuries handout or they just don't care to use machines the same way as other employees. The employee that slips on the wet floor may want to sue their employer, but if there was a sign up saying that the floor was wet, it is the employees fault for not being cautious. However, there are some lawyers out there that will find loopholes and can still sue your employer for money.

With the ever rising cost of health care, American's are finding it harder to afford any type of coverage at all.For years Federal and State policymakers have been looking for ways to make health insurance more affordable but have not come up with a great answer yet.The U.S. employer based health insurance market provides insurance coverage to almost two thirds of the American population under the age of 65.As an employer you can offer employees work sponsored health programs to cut down the costs for individuals and family members.Let's take a closer look at what work sponsored health programs are, who is eligible, and try to answer some other important questions.

What's so important about health insurance?
As an employer looking to hire, offering affordable health insurance as a fringe benefit can come in quite handy.Employment based health insurance is more likely to be less expensive for the employee than an individually purchased coverage and offers tax benefits to both the employer and the employee. The system of employer sponsored health insurance has provided Americans and their dependants with health coverage for a long period of time. And yet there are still some who choose not to participate in these programs. Those that choose not to, usually experience poorer health and die earlier than those who are insured.Health insurance is important, and you need to help your employees understand that.

treadmill63329383.jpg
As health care costs continue to rise employers are beginning to ask themselves "is there more we can do to promote healthy with our employees?"And the answer to that question is undoubtedly "yes" there is more you can do.Encouraging a healthy lifestyle in the workplace is the best place to start.Employees across America work about 2000 hours a year.Health and Wellness among employees is directly related to the quality and quantity of productivity within a company.Your company, we can then say might thrive on your employees. How well will it function if they are not healthy?Poorly is right, if that. You may find your company out of business if you don't get a hold on this right now.

How to cut the costs of lost productivity from unhealthy employees

pushups63329537.jpg
The success of a company depends largely on the quality of its service or product and how well their employees perform their job. When employees come to work ill, or stay at home and miss important days, productivity is compromised and you lose money. So how do you cut the costs of lost productivity from unhealthy employees? The answer is simple right, maintain healthy employees. With a number of different employees and a number of different colds, virus's and germs out there, it makes it difficult to control how healthy an employee is.Believe it or not you can help; bottom line is a healthy employee is a productive employee.

Acknowledge Bad Habits and Educate
Because most of the cost from unhealthy employees is lost productivity we need to figure out a way to help employees see that their habits are costing the company money and bad for themselves.Educating employees is the first step in gaining back lost productivity and helping them change their habits.Everyone has some sort of bad habit they need to kick whether it is smoking, junk food, or not exercising.Habits control the way employees perform duties at work and those habits can lead to lost productivity and a poor health.Think about holding some healthy living classes that touch on some basic healthy living topics; good nutrition, regular exercise, smoking and other abusive substance, diabetes, etc. These are all things that plague the workplace whether you like it or not, and in order to spark a change you have to address the problems.

excercise24242415.jpg
More and more companies today understand the benefits of creating a healthy workplace and encouraging their employees to make healthier lifestyle choices.Considering the average American spends 2000 hours a year at work feeling underpaid and underappreciated, the need for health becomes a major issue. So as the owner of a company, what are the benefits of offering incentives to employees for healthier lifestyle choices?

How to Encourage Change
A healthy culture is one where the entire body or workforce experiences the need and commitment for a change to health and wellness.Bottom line, if you don't have the commitment from everyone, it's not going to be successful. All levels, employees and employers need to commit to the change in order for your company to succeed. It is extremely important for your upper management to make the commitment and actually "walk the walk" if you know what I mean.It is one thing to say you will do it; it is another to actually do it.Make sure you have good leaders who will follow through with the plan, as employees will follow their example.Employees need to understand that their habit outside the workplace will greatly affect the way they perform inside the workplace. The first step in change is understanding. If an employee has been up all night and comes to work the next day exhausted, they compromise their own safety as well as others around them.

malenurse16358791.jpg
One thing that many of you probably remember from when you were a kid was having a school nurse. Basically when you got sick at school instead of getting sent to the office you actually got to go see the school nurse and they were able to decide if you should go home or go back to class. It was actually really nice having a school nurse on staff because it let somebody from a medical background make the decision if you were too sick to be at school or if you were still okay to stay at school. Not to mention the fact that if you got injured on the playground there was somebody who knew all about treating a variety of injuries right on the scene. But now a days having a school nurse on staff is a thing of the past, now a days all you usually see in schools is a district nurse who is too busy to be bothered by everyday sick students. But that still doesn't change the fact of how nice it used to be having a school nurse on staff.

How to reduce redness and pimples on your face

Are you sick and tired of having redness and pimples on your face? Join the club! Acne affects basically everyone, from teenagers to people all the way in their forties. Everyone has to suffer through redness and pimples on their face. But, just because you get acne doesn't mean that it has to take over your life! There are a number of different tricks that you can use to reduce the redness that comes along with bad acne. These tricks range from kitchen cupboard remedies to expensive treatments, so pick and choose the one that fits your lifestyle.
Start by looking at your makeup. Make sure that all of it says that it's noncomedogenic. This means that it won't irritate your sensitive facial skin. If any of your makeup or skin care products does not say this, then it's time to toss them because they clog your pores.
First of all, you can try the medicated solutions. Several dermatologists that I've talked to have actually said that Neutrogena products are the best ones for helping with skin problems, including acne redness. Neutrogena is available at your local supermarket or drug store. They have a number of different products that are engineered just to help reduce acne and its redness.
Proactiv is another really popular way to go. This treatment option is more expensive, but I have a number of friends who swear by it. Proactiv is a complete acne treatment system, but you can purchase certain medicines instead of the whole deal. The Proactiv toner is a great way to reduce redness and swelling that comes with bad acne.

For the chronic asthmatic and his family, an asthma attack is a scary thing.Shortness of breath, wheezing, a tightening in the chest, rapid pulse, and a cough are all symptoms of an asthma attack.A number of factors can aggravate these symptoms, including allergies, stress, exercise, and overly dry air. There are medications that can be taken to help control allergies, relaxation techniques to handle stress, and humidifiers can be used to combat dry air.

Using humidification to help control asthma attacks might save the asthmatic money spent on costly medications and medical bills.Though purchasing a high-quality humidifier might at first seem costly, the money saved in the long run is worth it.Also, there are additional benefits to using a humidifier that can benefit everyone living in the home, including softer skin and hair, less sinus congestion, more restful sleep, and an overall better sense of breathing comfortable air.

Hemorrhagic Stroke

A hemorrhagic stroke is one of the two main types of stroke. It occurs when the flow of blood to an area of the brain is blocked, which can cause the death of brain cells and brain tissue. Blood carries oxygen and other nutrients that the brain depends on, so when the blood flow stops, certain parts of the brain aren't getting the nutrients and oxygen they need; thus, they die. As a result, certain functions of the body that are controlled by those particular nerve cells may lose their ability to perform. In many cases, stroke causes death.

Specifically, hemorrhagic stroke is caused when blood vessels in the brain rupture and begin to bleed into the surrounding tissue. This bleeding compresses other blood vessels that are nearby and causes the surrounding tissue to not get oxygen. This type of stroke usually affects a big area of the brain and is much more severe than ischemic stroke. The chance of death after a hemorrhagic stroke is high. Hemorrhagic stroke is less common than ischemic stroke, but it has a higher risk of death. There are certain kinds of hemorrhagic strokes, including intracranial hemorrhages, subarachnoid hemorrhage, epidural hematoma, subdural hematoma, and intracerebral hemorrhage.

Lecithin and cholesterol

Studies have shown that a product called lecithin may be effective in helping your body combat high cholesterol levels. Why should you do such a thing? Because high cholesterol levels in your body can lead to sickness and even death. High cholesterol can hit you when you least expect it, resulting in stroke and paralysis.
Imagine your veins and arteries as a complicated series of pipes, much like the plumbing system in your home. If you were too allow those pipes to rust and become filled with gunk, your plumbing system would soon back up and cease to operate. It is the same with your body. Too much fatty cholesterol will clog up your system. Too much fatty cholesterol is like gunk and rust in your veins. If you don't take action to clean the stuff out, a backup, or a blood clot, could occur, which could shut your whole system down. High cholesterol, then, is not a matter to take lightly.

Combating Dry Skin

Your doctor has probably told you that the key to combating dry, itchy skin is to moisturize. For many people this requires spending a lot of money on expensive moisturizing lotions or even prescription moisturizers that have to be applied repeatedly throughout the day.Fortunately, there are other, more natural ways to help treat and prevent dry skin.

The first step in combating dry skin is to understand what causes our dry skin in the first place. Our skin is made up of different layers, and the water content of each layer varies from one to the next. The very surface layer of our skin is called the stratum corneum, which is made up of dead skin cells. This layer had a water content of only 10-30%, which is considerably drier than the lower layer of skin, the epidermis, which has a water content of 80%.

Preparing for a cholesterol test

If you have a body, you have cholesterol, and that's a fact. There are, however, two kinds of cholesterol - simply put, the good and the bad. The bad cholesterol is known, for short, as LDL, or low density lipoprotein. This cholesterol clings to the walls of your veins and arteries, clogging them up, chocking them up, filling them, in essence, with a thick, gooey, obstructing paste, which it makes it harder and harder for your blood to flow through smoothly and evenly.
If you imagine your veins and arteries as a system of pipes much like the one that brings water to your sink and bathtub, and then imagine going a long, long time without cleaning those pipes, yet filling them with soap scum and hair and bits of food and all the rest of the junk that usually swirls down drains, so that eventually the pipes get filled up with residue that just does not belong there - forcing the water, in time, down a narrower and a narrower chute - until it can't go down anymore, and must come back up, and spill, and overflow - then you'll begin to get a picture of what happens to veins and arteries blocked up with LDL, the bad cholesterol. Your blood will harden and grow sluggish from the effort of moving through your dirty system, until clots form, and then, watch out! - it's stroke and paralysis for you, and even death.

Air Filtration and Purification

In a world where people are increasingly conscious of environmental effects on our health and lifestyle, finding a way to breathe more freely indoors as well as outdoors has become a common goal. Modern technology has made it possible for the average homeowner to experience clean, refreshing air in his own home through the process of air filtration and purification.

When we look at all the factors that contribute to poor indoor air quality, it isn't difficult to believe the studies that have shown that indoor air can be many times more harmful to our health than even visibly polluted outdoor air.The majority of airborne contaminants come from biological sources. These sources include but are not limited to: dander, hair, and saliva from household pets; bacteria and viruses that are carried by people, animals, and found in plant soil and debris; molds and mildew; some household carpeting, window coverings, and furnishings; house dust mites; cockroaches and rodents; and plants and pollens.

Humidifier plus Air Purification - The Perfect Match

As an asthma and allergy sufferer, and as a parent, the quality of the air around me was constantly on my mind.I would follow the news reports of pollen counts, local area inversions, and other factors that affect the quality of the air outside.I made sure we stayed indoors when the air was particularly harmful for our health.

Unless I could smell strong odors while indoors, I didn't stop to think about the quality of the air that we were breathing right in our own home.It was only after my father-in-law, a long-time HVAC technician, sat down and gave us a quick "Clean Air 101" lesson that my eyes were opened to just how harmful the air inside our homes can be.He introduced to us the benefits of using a humidifier plus air purification system to restore comfortable, clean air for myself and my family.

BILE ACID SEQUESTRANTS

Are you fighting with high cholesterol?Do you eat a low-fat diet, high fiber diet?Do you exercise on a regular basis? If so, you may want to talk to your doctor about taking a bile acid sequestrant to assist you in getting your cholesterol level under control.Your doctor can explain to you how cholesterol works in your body and why a bile acid sequestrant medication can help you get your cholesterol level under control, but here is a little information to get you started so that you can ask your doctor the right questions and begin to understand the answers.

What are bile acid sequestrants?Bile acid sequestrants are medications for lowering LDL cholesterol.(that's the bad cholesterol) How do they work?Bile acid sequestrants bind bile acids in the intestine and causes more bile acids to be eliminated in the stool. This process reduces the amount of bile acids from returning to the liver, that in turn forces the liver to produce more bile acids to replace what was lost in the stool. In order to produce more bile acids, the liver then must convert more cholesterol into bile acids which lowers the level of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Fitness for Teen Girls:

Fitness for Teen Girls:
Something that would be a major help for girls that are in their teens would be to help them focus on fitness. Rather than focusing on what they do not have that other girls do have, focus on taking care of what they do have.

If women could learn to take their fitness into their own hands and not worry about any of the other girls than there would be a lot less problems for them. They would learn that they are in control of themselves and they would learn to love their bodies as they learned to take care of them

Exercise Bikes:

Exercise bikes have been around for a VERY long time. What exercise bikes used to be are ancient compared to the incredible things they have come up with today. Exercise bikes used to just be stationary bikes that you pedaled and got exercise. They were old, medally, wiry things that worked kind of oddly. At least by today's standards.

They now are electronic (still stationary) and have all sorts of neat features. The bikes today have different levels you can choose to ride at. So if you want it to be hard or easy, you can choose. They will also do things such as give you different programmed workouts that will take you like you are going up hill, downhill or whichever program you choose.

Saturated fats

Fat. The very word, nowadays, makes most people shudder. Emphasis is placed on having skinny, fat-free bodies, in some cases skeletal bodies. These ideals are unrealistic and unhealthy. Some fats are good for you, and necessary for a highly functioning brain and a disease-free, healthy body. The key is to know which fats are good fats and which fats are bad fats, and to choose the former (in moderation) and reject the latter (as much as is possible).
Looks aside, it is important to know about bad fats versus good fats because bad fats can lead high cholesterol levels in the blood. High cholesterol levels in the blood, in turn, can lead to heart attack, stroke, even death. Bad fats slow the body down, slow the blood down, leave you feeling heavy and wasted and tired. Good fats, on the other hand, fight high cholesterol levels and leave you feeling younger and more energetic.
Saturated fats and trans fats are the bad

Obesity is defined as an excess of body fat, but direct measurement of body fat is usually not practical. The BMI indicates a patient's relative health risk, and most studies designed to evaluate health risk will rely on BMI values.

Cholesterol and coronary heart disease

What is coronary heart disease?
Coronary heart disease is a term for what happens to the heart when its blood supply is lowered.
What are the effects of coronary heart disease?
The effects of coronary heart disease include angina (heart pain due to a lack of blood to the heart), heart attack, stroke, and death.
What causes coronary heart disease?
High levels of cholesterol. High levels of cholesterol lead to fatty deposits on the walls of your veins and arteries. These fatty deposits gradually narrow your veins and arteries, making their passages smaller and smaller and more difficult to get through. The blood just pulses through them slowly, rather than flowing through them as it did when your system was healthier.
What happens when the blood slows down?
Eventually, blood clots can form. When blood clots form, they block up your veins and arteries altogether, so that no blood gets through at all. It is at this point that heart attack can occur, that stroke can occur. You can lose the use of your limbs and suffer brain damage.
What are the chief causes of high cholesterol?
The chief causes of high cholesterol are poor diet and lack of exercise. A poor diet generally stems from eating too much of certain kinds of foods. These foods include animal products such as meat, cheese, whole milk, eggs, and cream. Fried foods, too, are harmful, and the fatty, greasy foods that you get at a drive-up window. Processed foods such as crackers and cookies and white bread also, in the long run, lead to high cholesterol. Too much of this sort of food cakes your veins and arteries with fat. Combine this caking process with a lack of exercise, and coronary heart disease is likely to occur.

Angina

What is angina?
Angina, simply put, is heart pain. It can feel differently for different people. It can be a sharp, piercing pain, or a dull, squeezing pain. Angina is not uncommon. Angina can feel like heartburn, too, it can have the burning, unsettled quality of heartburn.
What does angina come from?
Angina occurs when there isn't enough blood flowing to your heart. When your heart doesn't get enough blood, it doesn't get enough oxygen, either. Angina is a feeling of pain in your heart (sometimes you can feel it in your arms and neck and shoulders as well) when your heart isn't getting what it wants and needs.
Why wouldn't there be enough blood flowing to my heart?
Usually, high cholesterol levels account for this. High cholesterol levels mean that fatty substances have built up in your arteries. These fatty substances can build up to the point that your blood, which, when you were healthy, flowed swiftly and hotly through you, now just creeps along, blocked and impeded by all that fat. Imagine a common garden house. Now imagine that a system of dirty pipes has filled up the hose's insides with dirt, debris, leaves, and other gunk. If you turned the hose on, and the water couldn't get through, it would swell, heave, and finally burst. The feeling of pain in the heart can be compared to the swelling, heaving hose. Your blood is trying to get through your arteries in order to feed the heart and brain and body. The fatty substances won't let it; and your body lets you know that something pretty awful is occurring.
How did I get high cholesterol?

Who should have a cholesterol test

Who should have a cholesterol test, how often
Before answering the question of who should be having a cholesterol test, and how often, perhaps we should start with the question of why cholesterol testing should even come up to begin with.
- Cholesterol testing is the only way for you to know how high your levels of good cholesterol are, and, reversely, how high your levels of bad cholesterol are.
- Knowing the answer to these questions can save you (1) peace of mind and (2), in some cases, your life.

Why Employee Health?

Some may ask "why, on a site dedicated to providing knowledge on how to build business sales and profits, would you include a category on employee health?"

Those who ask probably haven't spent much time lately in the boardrooms, CEO offices, and accounting offices of companies.

Employee health has become one of the top five issues that virtually every company has to deal with.

1. Costs of health-related issues and benefits (health insurance, disability, sick days, reduced productivity due to health issues) have now reached the point where they represent 20-40% of all the profits of most companies.

2. These costs are on an amazingly steep upward trend, and this trend shows no sign of stopping.

3. Employees are becoming increasingly less healthy, as our population ages, grows heavier, and pays the price of lack of preventative care during their younger years.

4. Many companies are seeking ways to proactively resolve these issues, through wellness programs, benefit plans, and company policies.

So, it is with these needs in mind that we have created this new section of the BusinessKnowledgeSource.com site, the Employee Health and Fitness section.
