Safe Tattooing

weightlifting30890130.jpgPeople get tattoos for all kinds of reasons, cultural, cosmetic, personal, and medical, but no matter your reason for getting a tattoo, it is important that you get it right so that you do not get infection, irritation, etc. The following are some tips for getting safe tattoos.

1. Choose the right studio. A tattoo is not something you get on a whim, it is a permanent thing, and requires ink to be injected under the skin. Because when you get a tattoo the skin is broken, you want to find a studio that is super super clean. You are looking for doctor's office, sterile, as you can get disease, infections, etc. if it is not. The tattoo machine, or gun is going to come in contact with your body fluids. What happens if it was not properly cleaned after the last person? So, look for the cleanest place you can find. Check everything from the lounge, to the chairs, to the bathrooms.

Next, when selecting the right studio, make sure that tattoo artist is licensed. They have to know the correct procedures, and make sure that their license is up to date.

2. Make sure your body is prepared for a tattoo. While it is most important that the place is sterile, clean, and that the artist knows what they are doing, and has a current business license, your body needs to be ready as well. The tattoo artist should advise you on what to do, but be sure to consider the following:

  • If you are sick, wait and get the tattoo when you are healthy. If for some reason the needle isn't sterile, or you get an infection, your body will have a harder time fighting it if it is already sick.

  • Don't drink alcohol or take any drugs, over the counter, prescription, or recreational the night before or day of getting a tattoo. Aspirin, for example could thin your blood, and make for a bad experience.

  • Make sure the area getting a tattoo is sterilized before you start.

3. Make sure the tattoo artist is vigilant in sanitary conditions before giving you a tattoo. There are a number of things they should do to ensure you get a safe tattoo. Consider the following:
  • The needle. It should be removed from a sterile package, and be single use. Watch them open it, don't take their word for it. You do not want to use someone else's needle.

  • Ask about how the equipment is cleaned between uses. They should have sterilization equipment used to clean the instruments, gun, etc.

  • Be sure that the artist not only puts on sterile gloves, but thoroughly washes their hands before doing so.

  • Make sure the work area does not have stuff on it, such as an iPod, water bottles, purses, etc. while these seem harmless, they are not sterile, and thus could spread a bacteria, etc.

4. Know the risks before getting a tattoo, and do what you can to prevent them. Risks include infection, reaction, and more. You could have an allergy to the dye in the ink, or you could be infected with a bloodborne illness if the needles are not clean, or the equipment not properly sterilized. You could get infection or irritation if you do not care for the area well. So, before getting your tattoo, know what the after care instructions are in order to help your tattoo heal properly.
