Yoga

Today's yoga is a great way to keep healthy and fit. It is basically a series of asanas, which are poses and postures, that are performed in order to strengthen and calm the body and mind.

While traditional yoga is a religious practice based on meditation, modernly yoga is practiced by much of the Western world and other areas of the world as part of a fitness routine.

Yoga has become one of the hippest types of exercise around, common in big cities such as L.A. and New York City. It is also widely popular with celebrities.

Yoga and Health
Yoga is usually a combination of physical exercises, breathing exercises, and meditation. It is calming and relaxing as well as strengthening and energizing for people both young and old. These aspects of yoga are why many people with serious medical conditions practice yoga. It is particularly beneficial for people with heart disease, asthma, and back problems.

Studies have shown that yoga promotes heart health in several ways, including lowering high blood pressure and reducing mental stress. For people with back problems, yoga has been shown to help with physical strength, flexibility, and endurance. Yoga also helps people relax through breathing and meditation techniques, which people can use to manage their chronic back problems.

Yoga has become a common type of therapy used to reduce stress and all of the health problems that come with elevated stress levels. According to a survey, yoga is the fifth most commonly used CAM therapy (complementary and alternative medicine) in the United States during 2002.

Yoga and You
Just about anyone can practice yoga. All it takes is some time and basic knowledge. The only exercise equipment recommended is a yoga mat; the use of a yoga mat will lessen your chance of slipping or falling when performing certain poses.

If you want to practice your yoga at home, you can simply purchase a yoga DVD and follow along with the instructor.

Yoga classes are also offered. You may be able to find a local yoga studio that you can go to or your local fitness center may offer yoga classes. Most yoga studios will let you pay per class or else you can pay a one-time fee that will cover a whole session of classes. If you aren't sure if you will want to continue practicing yoga, try signing up for just a single class first.

If you local fitness center offers yoga classes, you probably have to be a member before your can participate. Usually the membership fee covers all the amenities the fitness center has to offer so you will be able attend other types of fitness classes, utilize gym equipment, and take part in anything else it has to offer.

Most places offer yoga classes for different levels. Beginning yoga classes are quite common, so don't be worried that you won't know what to do or that you will look silly in front of other people. Everyone in a beginning class will be in the same boat you are.

There are yoga techniques developed for the beginner all the way to the advanced expert. Remember that it will take time before you can do many of the asanas comfortably. Be patient and just keep practicing. Be careful not to force yourself into poses because you may strain your muscles, bones, and joints and hurt yourself.

There are also classes for people to become certified as a yoga teacher. If you are an advanced yoga practitioner, you may be able to obtain your yoga teaching certification. Contact your local yoga studio or fitness center for more information on how to be certified.
