How many stock markets are there in the United States?
The second major and second largest stock exchange is the American Stock Exchange (AMEX).This Exchange is also located in New York City. The American Stock Exchange has suffered from a lack of attention compared to the bigger and better known NYSE and NASDAQ; however it is a large exchange in its on right and home of some innovative products. The American Stock Exchange is unique in that it trades mostly in small-to medium-sized companies. This Exchange is owned only by its members.Like the New York Stock Exchange it too traces it roots back to colonial times. It began curb side on Broad Street. This lead to this market being called "The Curb".Over the years this market has gained its own powerful reputation and currently resides in a historic building in the Wall Street district. The third major market in the United States is the NASDAQ.The NASDAQ is the home of some of the hottest tech stocks on the market and the place where many young companies get their start. NASDAQ carries the distinction of being the largest electronic screen-based equity securities market in the United States. The NASDAQ trades more shares per day than any other market while listing approximately 3200 companies. Many of these companies list first on the NASDAQ to get a feel about trading publicly. While these three exchanges listed above make up the majority of stock market exchange business there are many other markets within the United States. The Chicago Board of Trade(CBOT) handles options and commodities futures.Although it doesn't hold a market in individual shares of stock this is still an important component in the market industry. Also in Chicago is The National Stock Exchange (NSX) founded in 1885 in Cincinnati, Ohio. This market became the first to close its physical trading floor and become an all-electronic stock market. The National Stock Exchange moved its headquarters to Chicago in 1995 where it currently resides. The National Stock Exchange is said to handle 20% of all trading in NASDAQ-listedstock issues. The New York Board of Trade (NYBOT) is a physical commodity futures exchange located in New York City. This market began as the New York Cotton Exchangein 1870 . In 1998, the New York Board of Trade became the parent company. The New York Board of Trade functions as a private company. In addition to the major market there are many noteworthy regional markets. One of these is the Philadelphia Stock Exchange. The Philadelphia Stock Exchange (PHLX) is the oldest stock exchange in the United States.Founded in 1790 the exchange is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.Trading was halted on both the Chicago Board of Trade and the Philadelphia Stock Exchange on October 22, 1981 after anonymous callers said bombs had been placed in those buildings. The Exchange currently handles trades for approximately 2000 stocks, 1700 equity options, 25 index options, and a number of currency options. Another important regional stock market is located in Boston, Massachusetts. The Boston Stock Exchange (BSE) was founded in 1834 and is the third-oldest stock exchange in the United States.Outside of the major stock market The Boston Stock Exchange trades the most significant number of stocks.
