Six sigma green belts

whitebelt30747305.JPGIf you work in the world of manufacturing, you've no doubt heart of six sigma. Many manufacturing companies implement six sigma into their workflow to improve their processes and quality.

Six sigma is a well-known process that works to provide tools and techniques, often statistical, to identify and then rectify problems within an organization. By using six sigma methods, many companies can improve the overall quality and capability of their products while reducing defects and any process that contributes to waste.

Many business people, looking to get ahead, become experts in six sigma. This is done by certifying through the various levels. There are three main levels in six sigma:

  • Green belt

  • Black belt

  • Master black belt

Each level increases in responsibility, and each level must be trained in the previous level before continuing to the next (for example, a black belt must also be trained as a green belt before he can be certified as a black belt.) Champions, often upper management, act as mentors to black belts and are also certified as green, black, and master black belts.

What is a six sigma green belt?

If you are beginning your certification within six sigma, you will start as a green belt. After having undergone green belt certification, a green belt is able to form and assist six sigma teams. They will also be able to manage six sigma projects in their entirety within the organization they're working for. Once certified, if they choose to progress in the program, they can also advance to black belt training.

Six sigma training

Six sigma green belts will usually attend a training program about five days in length. It includes classroom training and hands-on team projects.

Curriculum for the green belt begins with learning the DMAIC methodology. DMAIC stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control, which is a cornerstone for six sigma projects and processes. Through this training, they will learn:

  • Management and project management techniques to assist them in managing their six sigma projects

  • Quality management and quality control tools and processes

  • How to define customers and their needs and make appropriate recommendations for products

  • Various processes and data collection and analyzing

  • How to maintain the changes that are implemented in the new process

  • Typically, a green belt will be accompanied to the training by a black belt within their organization. The black belt will assist them with their projects and help them choose one for the training.

Finding six sigma training
Six sigma trainings are held all over the world and even online. More often than not, the company or organization in which the trainee works will already have a six sigma training program in mind. This is important because while it is useful, six sigma training and certification doesn't follow a national standard. What is taught in one six sigma green belt training may be different from another training held in another state or city. That's why many managers and executives prefer their employees to complete six sigma training from the same place.

Becoming green belt certified in six sigma is a smart career move for many people. It teaches a wide range of processes and solutions that are not only useful in manufacturing, but in other facets of business as well.
