When to consider outsourcing your manufacturing? This question can be answered in several different ways. In order to know the answer, you will need to evaluate what your manufacturing needs are.

Manufacturing outsourcing is the process of hiring a company outside of the United States to complete the manufacturing process. That means using a company that takes raw materials, their own manpower, and machines to complete the manufacturing needs.


There are many benefits to manufacturing outsourcing. The main one being that the overall process of manufacturing can be very financially challenging. The process that comes together to get all of the products created can take a great deal of money in the United States.

Here are some of the benefits you will be looking at when outsourcing your manufacturing.

1. After the set up of the plant, it is overall much more cost effective to run the plant. This is because the overall labor is less expensive. Along with the fact that you can usually get the needed materials for significantly less.
2. In cases that the companies do not necessarily want to run the manufacturing plant themselves due to lack of employees, or lack of experience, then outsourcing can often times be the more logical decision.
3. There would not be a need to hire and fire employees based on supply and demand.
4. Economically many smaller companies are working better by outsourcing.

If however you want to maintain a tight nit control in your manufacturing, outsourcing would not be for you.

Also there is the fact that the initial cost can be someone limiting for some smaller manufacturing companies.

With these factors in mind, you will have to weigh out what will outsource do for you. This is where it becomes the time to look at what you want to spend. In addition to how your business plan works for changes.

If you know that you will need a consistent supply of products over the years time. Then it is easier to plan out what and when you will need it. However, this is not often times the case for manufacturing. Therefore it will be important to project how much you will need of any given product and any given time.
From there, you will want to look at what the change will do for your company. Will there be job loss. With the changes, will there be significant changes in your community. This is not a main determining factor f or many. However, the consumer is in the community.

Also, it is key to know what your market will allow. Outsourcing can appear cheaper. But if the market does not allow it and support it, you could be throwing money out the window.

The key about outsourcing that will be highly important if the plan for outsourcing is to work, is consistency and combined management. If not, you will get the people at the manufacturing plant, and the people in the home base, having issues. There will be additional costs for travel, repair, and quality.

With this in mind, it will be necessary to make sure that the expectations are clearly set ahead of time. That way you can be sure to have the outcome being exactly what you need for your business.

This is the base you can use as a guide to know when you should consider outsourcing. The biggest thing will be to look at the overall plan and what the result will do for your company in 1 year, 5 years, 10 years and in the future.
