5 keys to marketing to teens

In any business that sells a product or service there is a necessity to market your product efficiently. How to get your product on the market can weigh on your mind, especially if you are unsure about the group you are marketing to.There are many variables to consider when marketing a product.Baby boomers, soccer moms, yuppies, and teens all view the same products differently. They may not even be interested in looking at a product if it isn't marketed towards their demographic group. This is why it is so important that you are familiar with the group you're marketing to.This article will look at teens: who they are, what they're interested in, and 5 key points to marketing to teens.

It's not difficult to figure out who teens are. They are the section of the population between 13 and 19, although 18 and 19 year olds can sometimes be included in a different demographic group (college students). They can be one of the most difficult groups to market to when they are not correctly understood, but also one of the most enjoyable.

Teens are always ready to pick up the next up-and-coming trend. No teenager wants to be the only one at school who's not "in" with the trends. They are usually insecure about themselves and would rather fit in that stick out.Teens are somewhat self-centered, but this selfishness comes in part from their lack of self esteem. They have not yet figured out how to react to the world, make friends, deal with difficult situations, stick up for themselves, etc.But they are full of opinions as they learn to deal with life and think for themselves.Being a teen can be a rough period of life for some, but fun filled and enjoyable for others.

Now onto five tips to marketing to teens:

1. Divide the group appropriately: the demographic group called "teen" experiences more change and development than almost any other group.Think about it: a 13 year old is interested in very different things from a 16 year old, who is in turn thinking about different things than a 19 year old.Be aware of this as you decide which group of teens to market to and how-and customize your message appropriately.
2. Keep your brand strong: as mentioned above, teens are very susceptible to what's "cool" and what's not.Be sure to keep your brand focused on the teens-give it a new, contemporary look, or hook up with an already popular existing brand.
3. Get the language right: knowing how to talk to a teen is almost as important as knowing what to sell to them. This is not to say that you should lapse back into 8th-grader speech, but you should know the current "cool" words and phrases that teens are familiar with.
4. Updating is imperative: remember how fleeting your preferences were as a teenager?Remember how one day Dave was the hottest guy at school and the next day he was chopped liver?A teenager's preferences can change from day to day, so you must always update your styles, websites, advertisements, language, etc.
5. Use celebrities: as mentioned above, teens are always worried about looking and acting "cool."They look to their favorite celebrities (movie stars, pop singers, etc) to show them how to dress and act (scary, isn't it?) But you can use that to help sell your product.

Marketing to teens can be some of the most entertaining work around. It can even be quite profitable when done right. And it's like, totally awesome and not, like, boring at all.
