Creating a slogan for your business

A good slogan can be a great asset to your business because it will help people remember what your business is all about. Though it does take a little work and some revision, anyone can create a catchy slogan.Here are some guidelines for creating a slogan for your business:

  1. Ask yourself some questions Before you try to write your slogan, there are a few things to keep in mind. Who is your audience? What do you want them to remember? Knowing your audience will really help you focus when you're writing your slogan. Would they appreciate a humorous slogan? Or would a heartfelt, sentimental slogan be better?Keep in mind what kind of impression you want to leave - this will keep you going in the right direction. Also remember what kind of benefit your business offers. Keeping this in mind will help you figure out how to market your product or service better.
  2. Figure out what type of slogan you want
    There are several different types of slogans that you can model yours after.These include a question, a feature, a benefit, and a challenge. Each type of slogan conveys the message in a different, thought-provoking way. Determine which type will fit best with the type of business you have.

    The question slogan is good for getting people to think about your product or service (an example of this is "Got Milk?").A feature slogan is a type of slogan that highlights something unique about your business.A benefit slogan, obviously, reveals a benefit of your product or service. A promise slogan delivers a kind of guarantee (an example is the classic Nyquil slogan "The -list of symptoms-.so you can rest medicine" It's a promise because it guarantees relief). Finally, a challenge slogan encourages people to try out what your business offers (like Nike's slogan "Just do it").

  3. Get creative
    When you write your slogan, you need to play with words to come up with something new and different. There are a couple poetic devices that can be used to help with your slogan.One is rhythm - slogans with a rhythm are fun to say and easier to remember. Plus, it could help if you put your slogan to music someday.

    Another poetic device you can use is alliteration. Alliteration is the repetition of common first letters of words (an example: "Every kiss begins with Kay."The "k" is the alliterative letter).Using alliteration also helps create a rhythm and helps make your slogan memorable.

  4. Try it out
    Once you have something written, try it out. Say it aloud and see how it sounds. Does it flow well? Is it easy to say?Sometimes things look really great on paper, but when said aloud, they don't sound quite right.

    After reading it aloud to yourself to test the flow, rhythm, and general sound of your slogan, consider getting some feedback from an honest family member or friend. Or, if you feel comfortable, you could consider asking one of your customers. When getting feedback, ask specific questions instead of a general "do you like it?"

  5. Make it your own - officially
    Once you come up with something that works, you may want to get it trademarked so that no one but you will profit from your hard work and creativity.Getting your slogan trademarked requires a little paperwork and filling out some applications. With some work and creativity, you can come up with a slogan as unique as your business. Although it doesn't always come easy, creating a catchy slogan will help your business gain visibility and will get people talking.
