How to find your niche, and the right person to pitch it to
If you want to get on a radio show or talk show, you will want to find your niche, and the right person to pitch yoruself to. If you are a resource in a niche, you become more and more valuable. You know that creating relationships is going to help you get on radio and television talk shows. The best way to create relationships is through a niche, with a specific reporter, or a special projects producer. So, one of the things you need to do is find a reporter. Here is how this works:
By becoming a valuable resource to someone on the show, whether it is the anchor, the producer, etc. you get the privileges that come with establishing a relationship within a specific niche. You have to build your relationship before you try to pitch to someone. When you do pitch your idea, you need to say, "I know this is not the biggest story you could have, but it would mean a lot to us if you could give it a little bit of coverage." They are going to think about it, they will see you respect the need to have valuable information, but they will want to help you out because you help them. You might only get 15 seconds, but hey, at least you get something. Relationships are a big part of getting on radio or television talk shows. You will want to be interesting still, but having a relationship with someone in a specific niche in the industry, will help you when you really need some coverage but would not get covered using normal resources. Being professional during this whole process is really going to help you out. You are a valuable resource, and you probably do have a lot to offer, you just need to learn how to package it right so that it looks as valuable as it is. Being a suck up is not the right way, being a professional is. Tomorrow look for advice on staying out of desperate mode even if you are. Learn what the pros think of the suck up, and how becoming a desperate suck up is never going to get you on the air.
