The ability to market effectively is crucial as to whether your business succeeds. However, many business owners go into business because of what they love to do or sell rather then because they love to market. This means that many business owners are playing catch up when it comes to setting up the marketing that they need to promote their business. The good news is that there are guidelines that can help you to set up a marketing plan that will be effective for your business regardless of your business marketing experience (or lack of it). Here is what you need to know about how to set up the marketing for your business-

- Find your target market-The first step is to find the people who are most likely to want to buy your product or service. Do not make the mistake of thinking that you can be everything to everyone. You need to segment out the people who will want or need what your business can provide for them. This means that you will have to take the time (or spend the money), to gain the market research that you need. Keep in mind that once you know who your target market is, you will then be able to determine where to find them, and the best marketing methods to use in order to decimate your marketing message.
- Figure out your marketing budget-Most of the time new business owners are opening fairly small businesses with limited resources. This can leave business owners feeling like they don't have the resources that they need to market or worse yet feeling like it won't really matter what they spend anyway because they can't keep up with their larger competition. This is a mistaken assumption. What business owners need to focus on is spending their marketing dollars in the most effective way possible. Once you know how much you can spend you want to find ways to get the highest possible return on every marketing dollar that is spent.
- Write down your marketing plan-Once you know who you are going to market to, how you are going to market, and how much you can spend it is time to get it all down on paper. Carrying around vague marketing plans in your head is not an effective way to run the marketing function of your business. You should take the time to write down your marketing plan including any marketing goals that you want to achieve. You can then use your marketing plan to check the progress of your marketing, check to see that you staying in your marketing budget, and make any changes that you may need to. In addition, it is important to keep in mind that any potential lenders and investors will want to see that you have a written marketing plan as part of your overall business plan.
- Periodically go back and start all over again-Many business owners make the mistake of thinking that they once they set up a marketing plan they can walk away and it will work forever. The reality is that business is dynamic and there will be many different factors that affect not only your business but your marketing, as well. Savvy business owners make sure that they are periodically checking their entire marketing strategy in order to make sure that their marketing is on track and reaching the right people. If you stay on top of your marketing plan then you will be able to better respond to changes in your market whether they come from your customers, competition, or economic developments.
