How to use television ads to the best advantage

Having an ad on television can give you great marketing opportunities. But are you taking full advantage of these opportunities?

Here are some ways for you to make sure that you are making the best of your television marketing money.

- Don't be afraid to profile.Make your commercials speak to a certain group. You don't need to waste money advertising a new kind of paper towel to a preschooler, but their mother would be very interested. What about denture cream?During a rerun of an older show would be a good idea.
- Once you find the right audience, keep them.Let them see your ad everyday during their show.Work with the station you are advertising with and get a spot either at the exact same time during the day or at least during the same show.
- Signing a contract with a station that you are working with can save you money. They usually give you a discount for signing a contract, the bigger that contract the bigger the savings.
- Many stations will help you produce your advertisement with a signed contract as well. You can usually get a better deal this way.
- During the same show it is a good idea to have a thirty second spot, as well as a few fifteen or ten second spots.Use the thirty second one to get your whole point across and then don't let them forget by little reminder spots.
- If you use internet advertising as well, use the same ads on television and internet and save on production.
- Know whether you want a national customer base or a local customer base. This will help you chose the station and programming that you are going with.National advertising on average will cost twice as much as local stations.
- When there is a break in the regular programming and the station you are advertising with is showing reruns, it is ok to negotiate a discount.Reruns don't bring in as many viewers as regular programming.

There are also ways to make sure that your ad is doing an effective job. Here are ten tips for getting the most out of your advertisement.

- Have a simple commercial.Production doesn't need to cost a fortune with special effects and stunt doubles.Have a simple idea with a few attention grabbers.
- Get your audience's attention.Use whatever you decide will work for your ad, but catch their eye or their ear and make them stick around for the whole commercial.
- Just cover one idea.Don't overload the viewer with mounds of info, just give them the new promotion. If they have too much to remember they will just forget it all.
- Create a unique commercial.A viewer may mistake your product or service for someone else's if your ad doesn't make you unique. The worst way to spend advertising money is to advertise someone else!
- Make sure your point is clear. If you have an offer, say it.Beating around the bush, as they say, will make viewers change the channel and forget all about you.Be sure you mean what you say and you say it clearly.
- Let your viewer be involved. This can come from asking them a question, or tugging at their emotions.Make them stop to think when your commercial is on.
- Use viewers' emotions in your favor.Let them feel your commercial, whether it will make them move fast or think deep.Catch a moment with your viewer.
- Take into consideration production values.Use the sounds, colors, and actions to enhance your commercial without going over the top.
- Prove to your viewer that there is a benefit.Using testimony or a demonstration is a good way to help the viewer see the benefits of your products or services.
- After all is said and done, will your viewer know who you are or just what you offer?Did you include all of your important info, where to find you and how to get a hold of you?Make sure to identify yourself during your commercial, and probably more than once.
