Inbound and Outbound Marketing strategies

Several companies are focused on providing excellent customer service to their existing customers, as they know how important it is to retain existing customers. Inbound marketing strategies revolve around managing customer interact on the phone or in the store.

Inbound marketing provides a key advantage to your company for a number of reasons. First, you already have the customer's full attention. Second, the customer is ready to give you their time. Third, the customer is likely to agree to marketing offer on your end because they made the initial contact. When a customer initiates the initial contact, you have an opportunity to deepen the relationship with the customer and offer a new product to them at the time you are interacting with them.

Inbound marketing strategies have become so popular that many companies have reduced their attention on attracting new clients and instead focus on how they can sell more products to their existing customers. Many companies are still learning how to take advantage of inbound marketing strategies. Several companies rely on "offers of the week" promotions. While you may think this is a good idea, it is not. Anything that has a specific list of rules in order for a customer to obtain a new product is a bad idea. There are several different customer scenarios that won't fit into the "rule book" and this is a main reason why you need to consider one-to-one marketing strategies.

When you are deciding how to put your inbound marketing strategy together, you should start with the following ideas:

  • Decide how you can meet the needs of your existing customers and suggest how a product can be designed to meet the needs of the customer.

  • Discuss your current customers and how they access and use your existing products.

  • How much are your customers willing to pay for your product or service, can you improve on this?

  • Identify your competitors and discuss how you can provide better service to your customers.

While inbound marketing strategies focus on the long term, outbound marketing strategies focus on the here and now. Some outbound marketing efforts include:

  • Sales

  • Advertising and product promotion

  • Public and media relations

  • Customer service and satisfaction

Many companies use outbound to find new customers and generate leads. Trade shows, seminars, email marketing, and cold calling are the most common forms of outbound marketing. Some of these strategies work, but as the customer pool expands and learns; outbound marketing is starting to become a thing of the past.

Too often companies jump into outbound marketing and push their products on customers who aren't even interested in the product to begin with. Outbound marketing techniques are becoming less and less effective because the average person is busier than they used to be in the past. The constant need to be entertained has taken over for many, and advertisements, cold calling, email marketing are a hindrance.

The new form of outbound marketing has evolved to the internet. Search engines, social media sites, and blogs have taken over cold calling, trade shows and email marketing. Your chances for attracting new clients will come through some internet marketing campaigns versus a computer-generate mailing list.

Of the two strategies, inbound marketing is much less expensive and difficult. Inbound marketing strategies also save you time because you aren't out there spending hours contacting thousands of people who have absolutely no interest in your product.
