Maximizing search engine rankings

manoncomputer30342716.jpgIn order to get the best results in the search engine rankings your website is going to need to be search engine friendly. The first thing that you want to think about when making your website search engine friendly is the text format on your website, you want to ensure that it is can be read by search engines. To determine if your text can be read by search engines you will need to be able to highlight your text with the mouse. If you plan to use drop down menus on your website you will need to be very careful because Flash and JavaScript menu systems cannot be easily followed by search engines.

You should carefully plan the navigation of your website ahead of time so that search engines and users alike can access the content efficiently. When planning your navigation the one thing you need to remember for search engine optimization planning is to create the navigation around a specific set of keyword ranking targets.

Here are the steps you should follow for planning your website's navigation so you can maximize your search engine rankings.

Step one:
Plan the structure of your website ahead of time. This is going to allow you to determine how many pages you want and how you will categorize those pages based on sections.

Step two:
For each sectional page and content page, you are going to want to make your first choice of a keyword phrase for each of the pages. Your more general pages, such as privacy policy pages, can be ignored when thinking of relevant keywords.

Step three:
Research the keyword targets that you have selected for each sectional and content page. To research the keywords you will want to use a keyword selection tool, such as KeywordDiscovery.com or WordTracker.com. These tools will help you determine how popular your choices are. If you find that, the choices you have made are not as popular as you thought you can adjust the words by using other variations or synonyms until you find the keywords that are searched for the most often. You will then have to make that keyword the focus of the sectional or content page. This is the most important step of optimizing your website, but it is also the hardest part.

Step four:
You will want to optimize the navigation keywords for your users as well as for search engine optimization. Your navigation menu need to be immediately understood by your visitors, so you might have to make some trade-offs. What you want is links that are pointing to each page of your site so that they reflect the keyword target chosen for that page. Just remember the main navigation needs to remain clear and concise.

Other tips:

  • Make sure that you cross-link keywords in your content pages. This means that when you are writing each page of your website you want to make sure that you use the keyword targets that you selected for your page in certain spots. You want to include the keyword targets in the title, headline, subheadings, and the body text of each of your content pages. Then you also want to use the target phrase within your website's other content pages so that it links back to the page focused on the keyword phrase. When doing this make sure you do it only when it seems appropriate, not just for the sake of search engine optimization. This is important for search engine optimization because you are reinforcing the reputation in the search engines' eyes. The more a search engine sees similar words in hyperlinks pointing to a website, the more likely that page will be ranked higher in the search engines.

  • Put a rel="nofollow" attribute within the hyperlink for pages that do not need a high rank for. This includes Terms and Conditions, Disclaimer, Privacy Policy, etc. This attribute tells search engines not to follow and spider the links, which helps makes your page more reputable.
