Search engine optimization

laptops30842603.jpgSearch engine optimization or SEO is the process of improving the amount of traffic that is driven to your website from search engines. Search engine optimization works on driving quality traffic to your website through natural results, meaning the results from the search engine are not bought paid by your company to improve your ranking in the search engine. Companies want to appear earlier in the search engine results list because the earlier their website appears the more people they will get visiting their website from the search engine. Search engine optimization does not just focus on one kind of search, instead they target many different kinds of searches, including image, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines because they all work together to give a website presence on the internet.

In the mid 1990's webmasters and content providers began to optimize websites for search engines, so that their websites would show up higher in the search engines rankings. In the beginning, all the webmaster had to do was submit the address of the page to the various search engines. The search engines would then send a spider to go through the website. The spider was used to collect other information from the website, such as links to other pages. After the spider crawled through the website and gathered the needed information, it would return the information to the search engines so that it could be indexed. An indexer was used to extract vital information from the website that was then placed into a scheduler for crawling at a later date.

It wasn't long after that website owners began to recognize the value of having their websites ranked highly in the search engines. The soon found that the higher they ranked the more visitors they would have. This realization created an opportunity for both white hat and black hat search engine optimization practitioners. White hat practices are techniques that website owners can use to improve their rankings by having a good design. Black hat practices are methods that website owners use that search engines do not approve of, such as spamdexing. One thing that you need to know about black hat search engine optimization is that search engines look for websites that employ these types of techniques. Once they have found the websites they simply remove them and in most cases ban them from their indexes.

In 1997, when search engines began recognizing that webmasters were putting forth a lot of effort to make their pages rank well in the search engines, they also began to notice that some webmasters were beginning to manipulate their rankings in the search results. Most websites that tried manipulating their rankings in the search results did so by stuffing their pages with excessive and/or irrelevant keywords. In response to this manipulation search engines began to adjust their algorithms in an effort to prevent webmasters from being able to manipulate rankings.

Search engine optimization works great as a marketing strategy because it considers how search engines work and what people search for. To use search engine optimization as a marketing strategy you will need to optimize your website by editing its content and HTML coding to increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.

While search engine optimization can improve the number of visitors to your website, it does not guarantee that you will increase your sales. As a responsible business owner, you need to be aware of the fact that search engine optimization is not an appropriate marketing tactic for every website; depending on your goals, other internet marketing tactics might be more effective.
