Outsourcing has become a viable option for many businesses for many different business functions. This is also true when it comes to marketing. Many businesses feel that they cannot handle all of the marketing functions in-house so they turn to using an outsourcer. However, there are certain things that you should be aware of before you simply turn over your marketing to another company. Here is what to know about outsourcing marketing-

- What is their area of expertise? It is important to understand that not all outsourcing companies are alike. Some marketing companies that do outsourcing have one or two types of expertise. You need to find out what the area of expertise is for the company that you are considering. And most importantly if you are considering a particular company and they don't specialize in what you need it is best to move on to someone else.
- What type of training or education have they had? There is understandably mixed emotions when it comes to this question. Many business owners feel more comfortable hiring a firm that has been trained extensively in marketing while other business owners will want an outsourcer that has more experience and demonstrated success rather then relying on education alone. Whichever is most important to you, it is still a priority to find out what type of training the people in the company have that you are considering outsourcing to.
- What certifications and memberships do they have? This can tell you how active this company is in the marketing community. In addition, you want to find out if they have been certified in certain areas. This question can also let you know if the business is interested in staying current with marketing trends.
- What notable achievements do they have? The best indication of how well they will handle your marketing will be found in how well they have handled the marketing for other companies. You want to make sure that the outsourcer you are thinking of hiring has had past achievements that will help them to be successful with your marketing campaign.
- Do you have client references? The bottom line is that you should never hire an outsourcer who will not provide you with references from past customers. Any hesitancy to do this or citing client privacy should be taken as red flag. You should immediately move on to consider hiring someone else. Do not allow yourself to get overly excited about a sales presentation without thoroughly checking them out with their past clients. Finally, keep in mind that it is not enough to get client references you need to actually follow through and call them.
- How much do they cost? Remember, that part of why you are outsourcing your marketing is to get a cost effective solution. You need to make sure that you are very clear on how much this will cost and exactly what you are paying them for. In addition, it is crucial that you take the time to shop this around. You want to make sure that you are getting the best deal possible.Simply choosing the first company you come across to run your marketing campaign is not an effective solution to outsourcing your marketing.
- How comfortable do you feel working with them? Keep in mind that this is a company that you will be working with on a regular basis. Do you feel comfortable with the staff? Do you feel like they will make the work they are dong for you a priority? If you don't feel comfortable in the working relationship you may want to consider hiring someone else that you feel better working with.
