Broadband and mobility for small businesses

If you have a small business, broadband and mobility will be important for you. Mobile devices and technology allow you to have access to your employees, customers, suppliers, network information, and more when you are outside of your office or area network.

This is particularly helpful when you are traveling, on the road, or have a business that takes you away from your office. For example, if you have a real estate business, you are most likely away from your desk for the majority of the day. But broadband and mobility devices allow you to access your emails, customers, listings, and other important information when you are away from the office.

The following are some things you need to know about broadband and mobility for small businesses:

Broadband
Broadband is an important aspect of mobility for small businesses. Wireless broadband allows you to access the Internet or communicate wirelessly, such as sending emails, wherever there is a cell phone signal. A cell phone carrier (for example, Verizon or others) provides you with a wireless broadband card, which you then put into your laptop or your mobile device, such as a PDA. You can expect to pay a monthly fee for broadband, and in turn you can access the Internet from pretty much anywhere.

Broadband is often confused with wireless LAN but differs. With a wireless LAN (local access network), you can access the Internet via your laptop as long as you are by a wireless "hotspot," such as an airport or coffee house. Wireless broadband is much more convenient and offers better mobility for small businesses, because you don't need the hotspot to communicate wirelessly or access the internet.

Mobility
Mobile devices make communicating with customers and employees easy and efficient. There are a number of different mobile devices helpful for small businesses, including:

Smartphones
Iphones and Blackberries are examples of smartphones. With this type of mobile device, you have a phone as well as many of the advantages of a PDA (personal data assistant) in one small, convenient device. You can access web pages, emails, your calendar, appointments, and more. You can also sync these phones with your desktop, so you can view Word documents or your files. The I-Phone has a number of apps you can download that can help you with your small business as well. Many of these will also allow you to listen to music. With a smart phone, you will also be paying extra service charges for Internet access. But many small businesses love the mobility of these smaller devices.

Email access
Small business owners want to be able to access their emails and send replies with attachments without having to connect their laptop. You can access your emails from smart phones or PDAs easily without having to find a wireless hotspot or pull out the laptop, whether you're waiting for an airplane or on a job site. This is very helpful for staying in touch.

Online conferencing
You can increase your mobility without leaving your office with online conferencing options. This allows you to set up a live conference call that allows your customers to interact with you as if you were sitting in the room via a webcam. This helps save on travel costs and still gives the benefit of seeing the faces and expressions of your customers.

Broadband and mobility are important aspects of a small business. These are just a few of the helpful devices you should know about.
