Employment attorney

What is an employment attorney?
First of all, "employment attorney" means "employment lawyer," and vice versa. When you think of an attorney, therefore, you are thinking of a lawyer. An employment attorney is a lawyer who specializes in employment law.
I'm used to think of lawyers as the bad guys. Am I wrong?
It's true - we've all heard the lawyer jokes out there. Lawyers are evil, lawyers are greedy, etc. Lawyers, however, perform a very important function in our society. Lawyers are trained in the law, which is a complicated affair. Lawyers go to school for years and years in order to understand the law, just as a doctor goes to school for years and years in order to understand the human body. If you find yourself in physical trouble, you go to a doctor. If you find yourself in legal trouble, you go to a lawyer (or attorney).

Why might I hire an employment attorney?
Well, let's take a couple examples. Let's say you get hired by a company from out of state, and you pack up your belongings and family and move to that state. You're excited; it's a great job; it's a great job with great benefits. During your first year, life flows along smoothly. But in your second year a problem arises. You become seriously ill. You go to a doctor - "You've got X," he says, "which will take a long time to treat properly. Also, it'll be quite expensive to treat it properly." But you're not worried - you have a great job with great benefits, remember? But let's say that your company tries to cheat you. They find a loophole in your contract that supposedly allows them to get out of paying your medical bills for X. "Sorry," they say. "You're going to have to pay for your treatments on your own." This is where an employment lawyer or attorney would come in. An employment lawyer or attorney would come in and try to get you your rights. An employment lawyer or attorney would look closely at your contract and show a judge where your company had tried to cheat you or scam you. Now for the second example. Let's say that you're a secretary to Mr. Smith. You handle all of Mr. Smith's business throughout the day, from telephone calls to emails to faxes. One day you discover that Mr. Smith has been charging the company for business trips that have nothing to do with the actual business. He's costing the company hundreds of dollars a month; or, in other words, he's stealing hundreds of dollars a month from the company. You go to Mr. Smith's bosses and tell them what you've discovered. Mr. Smith's bosses penalize him. And Mr. Smith then penalizes you. He cuts your hours; he cuts your pay; he makes life miserable for you around the office. Here is another situation in which hiring an employment lawyer or attorney would be perfectly within your rights.
How do I find a good employment lawyer or attorney?
The Internet is a good place to find an employment lawyer or attorney. Use your favorite search engine to look up "employment lawyer" and see what happens. All sorts of sites will spring up, each claiming to be the one you're looking for. This means that you'll have to do a little research in order to find the ideal employment lawyer or attorney for you. Look at the different employment lawyers or attorneys and see what they claim. Find out which employment lawyers or attorneys have successful records. You'll want an honest, hardworking, successful employment lawyer or attorney to serve you. Ask around. Ask other lawyers that you know if they know of a successful employment lawyer or attorney that could serve you. You can also try calling your State Bar Association. Your State Bar Association will have a list of every employment lawyer or attorney in your state, and will have information on each of them.
