As a small business owner, you are constantly looking for ways to get the word out about your business through various marketing tactics.

One thing you might want to consider is placing your small business in directories. This can be a very beneficial way for people to turn to your business for services. Most people turn to directories to look for services-for example, if you need your windshield repaired, chances are you are not sure who to call.

Why put your small business in directories
Putting your small business in directories is advantageous for a number of reasons. Some of these include:

  • More targeted audience. If you are selling a product and service to a specific audience, putting your business in a directory is one way to reach potential customers you know for a fact will be interested in your services. For example, if your business is carpet cleaning, you can put your listing in a directory that is specific to home improvement or cleaning.
  • Variety of options. When it comes to using a business directory, you have a number of options. You could list in the Yellow Pages, trade magazines or directories, or online directories. This allows you to reach more people and expand your potential client base.
  • Right for any budget. You can either pay to have your business listed in a directory, or you can list your services in a directory for free. Either way, getting your small business in directories can be done with any budget.
  • More legitimate. Businesses who are advertised in business directories, even the White or Yellow pages, are often seen as more legitimate.
Types of directories The following are a few different types of business directories:
  • Yellow Pages. Yellow Pages comes in a traditional phone book style, and they also have an online version many people turn to. This is a fee-based service, and the amount you pay will depend on whether you just want to be listed, or if you are placing an ad in the Yellow Pages. The cost of an ad depends on size, color or no color, photos, and so forth.
  • White Pages. Similar to the Yellow Pages, the white pages features a separate directory for businesses. This is also fee-based and typically includes just a basic listing of name, address, and phone number.
  • Trade directories. Directories that cater to certain industries, like Angie's List or others, are very helpful for people marketing a specific product and service who want to target their audience.
Getting your small business in directories Putting your small business in directories is often as simple as making a phone call or filling out some information on the web. As a general rule, you can:
  • Visit www.listyourself.net to get listed in Directory Assistance. This will walk you step by step through the process.
  • Visit www.superpages.com to be listed online for free. This is another popular site where you can list your business.
  • Call the office for the name of the directory you wish to be listed in. They will then tell you exactly what information they need, whether or not they are going to charge you, and what the terms will be in regards to how long you will remain in the directory.

Getting your small business in directories is an excellent way to increase your business.
