How to keep your best employees

A company is only as good as the people that make it work, which are your employees. If you constantly hire people because they will work for lower wages, don't be surprised to get lower quality workers. Companies with high turnover rates always have problems with their hiring skills and then they struggle with employee retention because their employees are not satisfied with their job.

The best way to get the right employees is to recruit them to start with. Recruitment is extremely important for every company because it will provide you with the quality employees that will stay with your company for a long time. So how can you attract these individuals to start with and how can you keep them with your company for a long time? Here are some of the biggest selling points for employees:

  1. Compensation
  2. Vacation and sick leave benefits
  3. Health insurance and retirement benefits
  4. Career advancement
  5. Flexible hours
  6. Tuition reimbursement

Over half of employees that leave their current employers are looking for a company that will offer them better compensation and benefits. Some employees simply want more experience because they are bored with their current job. Employees want to work for an employer that values them. They want to be treated with respect and feel like they make a contribution to the company. When employers treat all the employees like "workers" that are just there to perform a job function, the turn-over rate will be significantly higher.

You want to offer an attractive benefits package to your employees, but they also need to remember the size of your company. Since you are a small business, your healthcare costs will be higher and you may not be able to contribute as much money to their retirement account. Although, a lot of larger companies have cut down on the retirement packages, so you could have a big advantage there. If you can't compete with the healthcare costs, give them flexibility with their hours. Sometimes flexible hours are worth the compromise for employees that need to arrange their schedules around their children.

In order to let your employees know you care about their opinion, you need to offer training sessions for them and ask them to participate. Ask each employee to plan a 10-minute presentation to give that will help their team and ultimately help the company. Make sure you listen to what your employees are saying and try to incorporate some of their ideas into your strategies. Always give credit where credit is due, especially if one of their ideas is productive.

People want to enjoy their work, they want to look forward to the people they socialize with and they want to leave their work at work, not at home. Make the office a fun place to be, even though you are conquering serious things. You can make work fun by taking short breaks to socialize with your employees, get to know each of them a little better and find out what their plans are for the future. If you notice some special talents with your employees, recognize them and ask them to share them in the office. Always link extra pay to special talents or excellent performances.

A successful office is well-organized and runs efficiently. When your employees need more paper, they should know exactly where to find it. If they want to talk to you, they should be able to pull up your calendar to see if you are in a meeting or not. A well-organized office will help everyone that works there and it prevents chaos in the workplace.
