Keeping ahead of the curve with your small business

Having a successful business is the goal of any business owner. But sometimes you can get stuck in a rut and not know how to get moving again. If you are having trouble keeping your business on a steady stream forward, here are a few hints that will help.

There are some things that you can do with your employees that will create a better working atmosphere to help with better sales and profits.

- Remember that employees are there by choice, not the choice to work (normally), but the choice to work for you.Give them a sense of ownership of their tasks and they will be more inclined to do them and do them well.If they feel that they are working for themselves then they will do a better job for you.
- Make work fun. This had nothing to do with letting employees do whatever they want, but make it fun to work.Create friendly competitions or have time during the week for team building activities.Let coworkers become friends that happen to work together.
- Instead of setting a whole bunch of rules so your employees feel like students, set a standard. This means don't have a dress code just have a business culture that sets a standard for dressing.Rules don't always fix problems, but talking can.Make work a community for the staff.
- When you need to get a message across to employees you don't always have to write a memo.Be personable and go talk to them.Get out there and talk with your employees, they probably have a lot to say too.Talking can be much more effective than a note, no matter how good it is worded.
- Especially if you hire family to work for you, treat everyone like family.Instead of your employees feeling like they are treated second rate, treat everyone like they are the most important employee you have.Their family matters, time with their kids, and the things you hold important are important to them too.
- Know your customers.Know what they are buying, and keep up with them.If you have a product and a newer one comes out, they will probably upgrade and so should you.Know not only what you are selling, but what customers are buying. You will never be happy if the customers aren't happy.
- Don't put all of your focus on bringing new customers in.Your old customers have been treating you well, so treat them well in return.Give them a reason to keep coming back. That doesn't mean stop advertising to new customers, but don't make that your only focus.
- Be a goal oriented company.Let goals and objectives drive your employees, and therefore drive your sales. If your overall goal is to be profitable, which it really should be, then set smaller goals to get there.Use these goals at motivation and be realistic in setting them.
- Be a responsible manager. This means over your finances, employees, inventory, and customers.Have your finances under control, have satisfied employees and customers, and know your inventory.

These simple things will help you to be ahead of your competition.Leadership is doing what is best for your employees before what is best for profits.Take care of the people that drive your business and they will take care of business.Getting to the top means treating your staff and customers like they are gold. After all, to your business they really are.
