Looking toward a "green" future

It seems that the new project for large and small business is to "go green". Going green is when businesses look for a way to reduce energy costs and to reduce waste. Companies are rethinking how they want to manufacturer their products and many of them are looking for new ways to promote their products in a "green" way.

Instead of sending out direct-mailing pieces, companies are now offering email advertisements to their customers. They don't have to waste extra paper and ink to send all the information to their customers. All they need to do is click the mouse to send the same information to their customers via email.

Some companies are taking bigger steps toward going green. GE has released a line of products called "Ecomagination"; this line of products is on track to make over $20 billion by 2010. HSBC has begun recycling 65 percent of its paper waste and Wal-mart has begun a program that monitors and cleans up its environmental practices with its supply-chain. Several consumers have expressed their concern about the environment to the major retailers. Companies have begun noticing how their commitment to the environment is affecting their bottom line. Recently there has been a wave in new grocery bags that are environmentally friendly. The benefit to the new grocery bags is their ability to be re-used so the customer's are not going home with plastic bags.

Technology companies that partner with retailers are finding ways to help their customers dispose of old waste like obsolete televisions, cell phones, and old computers. Electronic recycling programs will cut down on the nations waste and reduce waste management problems that are currently plaguing society. Lead and other hazardous materials should not to be disposed of at the dump, by implementing electronic recycling programs; companies like Best Buy and Staples are helping the world to "go green".

The rising oil cost has forced many businesses to increase their prices in order to pay for the gas prices. Many businesses are encouraging their employees to car pool, use public transportation, or consider walking (if it is a reasonable distance). The evolution of the hybrid car has taken some financial burden off the wallets of many consumers, but it is still not enough. Several businesses are looking for ways to cut the cost of products through the transportation cost. All of the major auto manufacturers have been playing around with solar energy for years and looking for ways to convert this power into energy that will last for extended periods of time. There are some solar powered cars, but nothing has been released to the public yet.

A Hong Kong-based company called CLP Group currently operates power plants in 6 Asia-Pacific markets. They have begun including data that collects information on the total waste produced and the effectiveness of environmental programs in the annual report. This data allows the company to set goals for greenhouse emissions. For example, their reports showed that coal-fired power plants required cleaning equipment to reduce sulfur dioxide emission. Due to the findings in the annual reports, they were able to equip their coal-fired power plants with the latest "scrubber" technology to reduce these emissions from being released into the environment.

You have probably heard of the "light bulb" change that will be happening shortly. Currently incandescent light bulbs use 90% of their energy emitting heat. The new energy efficient light bulbs do not produce heat and therefore reduce energy costs. The energy efficient light bulbs last about 10 times longer than a traditional incandescent light bulb.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions are becoming a popular debate in many markets. Currently companies are recognizing that when they switch to "going green", their employees are happier and so are their customers. Energy consumption is a common concern for many people. When people make the commitment to go green and they purchase from a company who shares their idea, they are excited, engaged and will spread the word to other customers about your company. Take a look at your office and look for ways to go green; it is the future of your business.
