Reducing employee turnover

Dealing with employee turnover is just one thing small business owners need to deal with. It can be hard for some small businesses to keep their staff in-tact, while other small businesses will have the same employees for 10 years or longer. There are 3 basic things that promote employee retention; competitive salaries, vacation and holiday time-off, and tuition reimbursement.

The work you offer your employees is also key to reducing employee turnover. Some people have been known to leave a high-paying job simply because they didn't have enough work to do and they felt under-utilized. Then there are the employees that are so overworked, their only choice is to look for a new job just to re-gain their sanity. If you are dealing with a lot of employee turnover, here are some easy tips to follow to reduce employee turnover:

Tip # 1 - Appreciation
A lot of people will leave their employer because they do not feel valued at the company. People want to be recognized for the good work they do, not just the mistakes they make. Employee appreciation is important for employee retention. When an employee is happy with their job, they are less-likely to start searching for another one. Praise your employees for good work. If they pushed hard on a project, make sure you recognize this and tell them how much you appreciate their contribution to the company.

Tip # 2 - Opportunity
When you hire someone, you inevitably talk about their talents and their future career plans. Most companies will then talk about the opportunity for growth within the company as this is attractive to several people that want to remain with a company for a set number of years. Give your employees plenty of opportunities to share their talents with the company through presentations, meetings, team assignments, and training sessions. An employee feels valued and respected when they are asked to share what they know, especially when it turns into a teaching opportunity for other employee's.

Tip # 3 - Respect
One of the biggest reasons people start looking for a new job is because they do not feel respected at their current job. When an employee comes to talk to you, listen to what they are saying. Make sure you repeat a few key sentences to demonstrate that you are truly listening to what they have to say. Never ridicule or embarrass an employee, this causes feelings of shame, embarrassment, and anger. For some employees, this is the turning point and they will downright quit before they have even started looking for a new job.

Tip # 4 - Flexibility
Another reason why employee turnover may be high is because of your set hours. Some employees need a little flexibility with their schedule to work around their medical needs or home life. Try to offer different hours to your employees so they have the opportunity to attend certain personal appointments. In addition to flexibility, try to close the office on holidays. If you cannot close the office, shut-down for at least half of the day and trade-off with your employees on who needs to be at work that day. Don't forget about state holidays too, these are important for employees that want to spend time with their families.

Tip # 5 - Recognize burn-out
When an employee is overworked or underworked, take notice of it. You need to talk to this employee quickly because they are on the verge of looking for a new job. When an employee is exhausted at the end of each day, they don't want to come back tomorrow and put in another 8-12 hours of work. Try to take some of their workload and distribute it amongst your other employees. If they don't have enough work, create some work for them. Sit down with them and start talking about different things they can do to add a challenge to their work week and offer them more responsibility within the company.
