Saving money on daily costs

Everyone is looking to save every dollar they can and businesses are no exception to the cost-cutting world. Several businesses are looking to cut costs so they can avoid lay-offs or cutting retirement and health benefits. If you are looking for ways to save money and cut costs, here are some simple ways to do it.

Start with your shipping costs. If you ship products to your customers, determine how much it is costing your company. Start price shopping to figure out who will give you the best deal. Sometimes the United States Post Office is the best way to ship your products, even if you do need to stand in-line for 10 minutes to mail your package parcel post. Another thing you need to look at it the transportation costs you are paying your suppliers. If you have delivery trucks and salesmen on the road, figure out how much it is costing your company to do so. Consider public transportation instead of mileage reimbursement for your employees that need to travel for work. You also need to take a look at every sale and determine which ones need to be in-person. Web conferencing can be just as effective as a face-to-face meeting. If your shipment costs go up, you need to start charging your customers more. Initially your customers may be upset, but you simply need to explain that your transportation costs have risen. If you do a small price increase, your customers won't even notice it.

Another daily cost you can reduce is your utility bill. Instead of turning on the heat or air conditioning, open the windows. If it's winter, set the heat at 69 instead of 72. The same rule applies for the summer, set the air conditioning at 75 versus 72; this small change will reduce your utility bill tremendously. Instead of using drinking fountains, supply your employees with a water cooler and re-usable cups. Tell each employee they are in charge of their cup and you will not replace it if they lose it. Turn off some of the lights in the hallway and in the office or use energy-efficient bulbs. Your energy costs will drop tremendously in the first month if you follow all of the above tips.

Do you waste a lot of paper in your office? How about recycling this paper in the office? Turn it over and use it as scrap paper for drafts. You can also use it for note-taking and phone messages. Try to send messages via email or instant messenger instead of on printed paper. Not only will this cut down on the amount of paper you use, it will cut down on your ink costs as well.

It's time to start being frugal when it comes to cost-cutting. Even though it may be nice to have a staff meeting in conjunction with lunch, this is an easy expense to cut. You can move this to a quarterly occasion instead of a monthly or weekly occasion. Another way to cut costs on meetings is to tell your staff it is a pot luck meeting, this way everyone will bring a different dish to the meeting and you all still get a nice lunch during your meeting.

One of the best ways to cut costs on daily expenses is to make a list of all your business expenses. This list should include everything down to the type of toilet paper and paper towels in the bathroom. If you have Charmin and Bounty, it's time to switch to the generic brand, even if the quality isn't as good. Simple cost cutting techniques can easily save your company thousands of dollars a year.
