Many small businesses are turning to the Internet for marketing. With so many people online or looking to online businesses for products and services, Internet marketing is a smart option for many businesses.

Search engine marketing
One type of Internet marketing is Search Engine Marketing (SEM.) Search engine marketing is a popular tactic for companies that have websites or sell their services online. There are different types of search engine marketing, but their main function is to increase your site's visibility in search engine result pages. For example, let's say you sell gift baskets online. If you type that into Google, you will see that over 25 million pages come up. Using SEM successfully, when people type in "gift baskets," your site will show up in the first few pages of results, increasing the amount of traffic to your site.

If you already use SEM, or you are thinking of it, the following are some search marketing tactics for small businesses:

  • Register your site. By registering your website with directories such as Yahoo, Google, and Open Directory Project, the more hyperlinks from high-quality and well-known sites (such as Yahoo and Google) you will have. Hyperlinks are words or graphics on internet sites that when clicked on, will lead the user to another site.
  • Use meta tags. A meta tag is a hidden HTML code that describes the contents of a website or a webpage. These tags are used to inform the person searching online about your page. Information such as the site's title and key words that describe the information about the site and page are included in a meta tag and show up when search results from an online search is displayed. For this reason, it's important to use accurate, descriptive meta tags for your site.
  • Choose your key words carefully. Like meta tags, key words are specific words about your page that will bring up your page in search engine results. Good key words are those that pertain to your site. Use your key words in the titles of your pages and throughout the text and you will increase your chances of success with search marketing.
  • Consider PPC ads. Pay Per Click, or PPC ads, are a form of SEM. With a PPC, you display an ad via a provider such as Google AdWords or Microsoft AdCenter that will come up when a key word relevant to your ad is typed in. However, you only pay the provider if your ad is clicked on.
  • Target your advertising. One successful tactic used to optimize your search engine marketing is targeted advertising. The more specific the keyword ads you buy are, the more traffic you will draw to your site. For example, if your business sells organic baby food, "organic baby food" would be a better keyword than "baby food."
Search marketing has become a popular form of marketing for people who conduct their business primarily online or who want to draw more traffic and business to their websites. The above tactics are a few tips and ways you can make your search engine marketing more effective.
