Many people want to own their own business. Some are really into the thought of running their own store, some want to be their own boss, some really like a product or store and want to be a part of it, and some just really want to own a business. You can always start up your own store, but owning a franchise can give you some of the same rewards, without having to worry about starting from the ground and working your way up.Let's look at some things you should know about small business franchises.

First off, you will probably have to take out a loan to become a franchisee.
You need to make sure that you are financially sound to do so and that you are willing to accept the risks.Just because it is a franchise doesn't mean that everything will be ok.You still have a possibility of failing and losing a lot of money.

If you are thinking about making your business into a franchise or if you are thinking about owning one, there are certain things that you should look for in a business.Ask yourself these questions:

  • Does the business have an original product or service?

  • If not does it have a lot of competition, in the general area as well as the country?

  • Does the business cost a lot to operate?

  • Will the business survive during hard times? Is it something customers would still come to if they didn't have a lot of money to spend?

  • Does it have a record of earning a lot of money?

  • Do most people like the idea and like the product?

  • Does the business take a lot of employees and a lot of time and effort to run?More than usual?

Think about the answers to these questions. Answer honestly and very truthfully. It is better to give up your dream of owning a health foods store if people in that area don't have enough money to purchase all organic foods and they aren't interested in them anyways.

There are lots of advantages to franchises.Let's list some of them.

  • The franchiser earns a lot of money and is able to do so through rapid growth of a product and not having to run each store
  • People who own a franchise will usually put more effort into making sure their employees are doing what they are supposed to because they are specifically influenced by how much money the store makes, a person who just manages isn't worried as much about the profits the company makes
  • The franchiser uses the money from the franchisee to expand their product
  • It's easier for a local owner to get things like licenses and permits, and the franchisor doesn't have to deal with getting those things
  • People who own a franchise are able to expand their business and get to learn a lot more because they have the people who own the business teaching them what to do and why
There are also many disadvantages like the following:
  • There won't always be people up to owning a franchise or who won't have the money to
  • If the person who owns the franchise does poorly or get in legal trouble, it looks bad on the company and it is sometimes really hard to get rid of a franchisee
  • People who own a franchise are basically renting the business and don't have much say in the rules set by the company, they just have to obey them
  • Franchiser's have to pay the parent company fees every month that can vary

If you want to turn your business into a franchise or are thinking about buying a franchise, make sure you do your homework. There are a lot of companies that will make things difficult for you if you own one but there are some that are great.Make sure that you know what you are getting into and make sure that you read everything you sign before you sign and agree to it.
