Small business management tips
Do you feel that you are a good business manager? Small business management is a skill that you can fine tune over the years but there are some simple things you need to do now in order to manage your business successfully.
Watch your costs
As a manager you need to be aware of your costs. How much money are you spending and do you feel that you are wasting a lot of money? When you have too many costs, it will lead to inefficiencies in the business. Your revenue stream will be exhausted quickly, leading you to have a difficult time when your equipment or machinery breaks down and it's time to order new equipment. Your staff can see when you are spending too much without generating enough money for your business so be very careful with how much money is being wasted and do your best to cut costs as much as possible.
Treat your employees with respect
A true manager values the people working for them. How do you treat your employees? Are you showing them that you truly appreciate having them as part of your staff? Do they look forward to coming to the office daily? Employees see respect in the way to treat them. Do you talk down to them and criticize them? Watch for the way in which you conduct staff meetings. Make sure everyone has a chance to talk and express their opinions or this will lead to disharmony in the office. Even if their opinions are not the direction you want to go, make sure they get a chance to express them and then thank them for doing so. When you make your staff feel respected and appreciated, you will have an easier time working with them and you will be able to control them easily.
Small businesses need to recognize the value in their customers. As a manager you will set the example for how your customers are being treated. Do you go out there are interact with your customers? Do you make each customer have a pleasant experience with the company and keep them coming back for more? A good manager is able to understand their customers and can spurn customer loyalty through the interactions they have with their customers. Small businesses especially need to watch their customer service skills as these repeat customers provide over 80% of their sales.
Know what you are up against
Another part of running a successful small business comes down to your competition. Do you know what type of competition you are up against and how do you plan to compete with them? Do your employees see that you are doing a good job trying to compete with them? Customer loyalty is huge for a small business that is trying to compete with larger companies. Small business management needs to research their competition and take a look at the marketing tactics they are using to attract attention. You must also research their products and services and know about them if you are to explain to your customers why they need to purchase your products over their products.
Excellent communication skills
A great manager has the ability to communicate effectively to their staff and customers. You are in charge of running this business and you need to communicate your management style to your staff. People need to understand your directions and they need to feel comfortable with you so they can come and ask you for clarification if they are confuses. Watch your listening skills as they also make up part of your overall communication skills. Do you listen to your employees? Do your employees feel like you truly listen to them?
