This can be a highly challenging process, if you have difficult managing your time. However, the good news is that there are tips that can help. - Have a plan-The first component of any plan, needs to be goals. It is important to keep in mind that you need to not only set goals, but write them down. Studies have shown that when people write down their goals, they are far more likely to achieve them. By setting goals, it will help you to develop a plan, know where you are going and most importantly how you should get there. When managing your time, short term goals are the most important, however, you should not overlook setting medium and long range goals, as well. Keep in mind that your daily goals, (which will help you manage your time), will be stepping stone toward achieving long range goals.
- Commit to a system-Too often small business owners will put a time management system in place, and then just as suddenly change to using something else. Whether you are using an online app, specific type of software or even just a time management philosophy, you need to commit to a system. Keep in mind that it really does not matter what you use, only that you understand it, use it and commit to it. The bottom line is that there is no right or wrong way to manage your time only that you do.
- Work in your productivity zone-Some small business owners find that they do their best work, first thing in the morning, while others need a few hours to reach full productivity, while there are still others who work best long after everyone has gone home. Knowing when you can do your best work, will help you to more effectively manage your time. You want to make sure that you are focusing on the most important task of your day, when you are at your peak productivity. Keep in mind that you should also try to avoid interruptions and distractions, during this time period, to further up your productivity and time management.
- Set some priorities-If you fail to set your priorities, you may constantly feel frustrated and overwhelmed. Setting your priorities will help you to focus on the aspects of your business that are most important to you. However, it is crucial to understand that there will always be items leftover that will still need to be done. However, by setting your priorities, the most important items on your list should be accomplished on a timely basis. Setting priorities and then scheduling their completion is one of the most effective time management solutions that any small business owner can use.
- Keep track of your time-Many small business owners make the mistake of thinking that since they are the boss, they don't need to keep track of their time. This can be a serious mistake. Many small business owners report that once they begin tracking their time, they are surprised to find that a large amount of their day is spent on tasks that are not crucial, or that can be done by someone else, freeing them up to be more productive. Keep in mind that your time tracking does not have to be anything elaborate (a simple notation on paper will do), however it can be an eye opening experience toward helping you better manage your time.
