While the news is full of stories about what small businesses in particular are doing wrong in this volatile economy there is even more information to be gained from the small businesses that are doing it right and thriving. Small business owners would do well to study these strategies from other businesses that have learned to how to grow and develop despite any other outward influence. Here is the information you need to know about what successful small businesses do right-

  • They develop a clear and consistent marketing message-All small business owners should understand that messaging is the careful development of the precise and concise language that quickly conveys the key message that you want known about your product or organization. In today's competitive landscape if you do not convey these messages quickly and have them resonate; you will lose your potential customer to someone else. In addition you should make sure your message and images recognize your product, so consistency is key. The last thing you want to do is to confuse a potential customer by losing focus on what is really important.
  • They work to sell their product or service-While many companies make the mistake of thinking that their product or service is so great and so different that they do not need to market it at all successful small business know that sales equals work. The reality is your target market needs to be told why they should buy your product or service. They also need to be convinced that they can not live without it. And once they have it, successful small businesses provide them with customer service and personalized attention to ensure they will continue to use it. All of these things will require marketing. Even small businesses with limited funds can do this, start with business cards, a Web site, informational collateral (print or multimedia), an introduction/sales letter, and a customer service/thank you letter. Once things are moving along then you can add direct mail postcards, electronic newsletters, video emails or product/service CD brochures to your marketing toolkit.
  • They clearly define their product or services benefits-Today's highly competitive marketplace is constantly changing and because of that consumers are often confused about the products and services they purchase. Educating your target market is critical by defining your product or service benefits. Keep in mind that if you can not put into writing what makes you different from the competition or what makes your product or service different from the competition how can a potential customer make an informed decision to buy. By defining the unique selling proposition for your product/or service you will help your target market differentiate you from the competition and that is the key to sales.
  • They do not underestimate the value of their existing customers-Many small businesses think that the way to increase sales is to just focus primarily on new customer acquisition. Unfortunately, this will often mean poor customer service to existing customers who, if serviced well, could have provided a strong revenue stream to keep your business healthy and strong. And worst of all the lack of good service and communication with an existing customer often means that customer will go elsewhere to find what they need or want. Successful small businesses turn existing customers into lifetime customers. Savvy business owners will call to say thank you and check in to see if their customer's needs are being met. While you might feel like you are wasting your time, or being a pest, if you ask any customer who stays loyal to a particular company and you will always get the same answer: "Good customer service!"
