So you have finally made the switch from your old 35 mm camera to a new and shiny digital camera. You studied up on all the features your new camera so easily provides for your photographic needs and have begun to shoot pictures. And you continue shooting and shooting more pictures everything from your son's soccer games to a friend's wedding. The only thing more appealing about digital photography than the ease of it is the low cost of printing the photos. But that leaves you with a new problem-should you print every picture where would you store it?Storage of digital images has become a new problem with the rapid growth of digital technology. Here is some information on the best forms of storage for digital photos.

Storage on the computer: Most consumers who are using digital cameras report being blissfully happy with the technology. The ease of taking pictures using a digital camera cannot be rivaled by any film camera.Anyone can shoot pictures without need for processing, just simply download and view them by using a computer. But this is a good news/bad news scenario. The good news is that these images with the higher resolution cameras are clearer and sharper with loads of detail. The bad news is they require a great deal more storage space on the computer than earlier images. They may in fact need up to three times more storage space. While you may no longer have to pay the photo lab for processing there is a realization that comes with knowing there is a cost in archiving all the pictures you take.

It is not unusual to hear digital camera users report that they can easily end up shooting 100 pictures over a weekend or at a special event. When you consider the many pictures that can be taken at a family reunion or wedding you see how the number could even be bigger. So say that your pictures add up to about 75 megabytes to download not a big deal until you start figuring out that the typical home computer comes with built-in hard disks of perhaps 20 gigabytes in size.Taking that 75 megabytes and multiplying that over the next 5-20 years and you see how storage starts to become a big issue.

Since it is true that hard disks fail eventually and you won't want to have your digital photos in a shoebox somewhere you will want to have backups of all your photo files. Most parents would dread the thought of having to tell their children there are no baby pictures because the hard disk crashed so the key here is to protect yourself. Here are some tips if you are going to give up film photography and go digital.

  • Get organized-decide where you are going to store your photo files and make sure you have enough space.

  • When storing your photo files date them and add a description so you are not left searching for that all important picture you really want. And most importantly back up all your files on a regular basis!

  • Consider keeping them in a digital photo album or scrapbook.Regardless of the many opinions given no one seems to know for sure what media is best for long term archiving of personal files.Until recently many thought the CD ROM was the best solution but time is now showing that there is a chemical breakdown after a few years that render them unreadable.

  • Some experts recommend maintaining three copies of all your digital photos. These would be: the original on your computer's hard disk, a copy on another hard disk (that you would use as an external backup) and a third on some kind of removable media.

  • View your photos once a year on each of these media to be sure they are still readable.Be sure and stay current with the technology. If you see something is going obsolete be sure and transfer the pictures to the newer media before the older one breaks down.

  • Consider using online digital archive storage. Many are free or at least low cost.Just beware though because you usually get what you pay for.Be sure and research your final selection before committing your pictures for storage.
