Faxing capabilities are a necessary ability to businesses and homes alike. Therefore, the need for faxing with a VoIP line is something you will want to make sure your provider has available for you, so that you can send faxes over your VoIP line

Sending faxes with your VoIP line is something that is done regularly now. However, this was not always the case. In some instances, your provider of your VoIP service may not offer faxing abilities. Therefore, you will need to make sure that you have the service dedicated to your VoIP connection.

Depending on the amount of faxing you do, or the overnight and courier usage you have, it may be a great idea and a money saving idea to set up your fax over IP instead of using the traditional fax connection.

With the analog traffic of a fax, it is more tolerant of the area it needs to be sent through and with the delays that may occur. Therefore, it is a great way to set up and send faxes. A fax machine looks like a regular phone to the circuit switch systems or public switched telephone network.

There is a little difficulty still in the home systems due to software and networking constraints where faxing is concerned. However with the growth and tecnilogical changes that have happened with VoIP over the short time is has been around, it will not be a problem for long.

There is a solution already underway that involves the defining of an alternate IP based solution for delivering fax over IP the T.38 protocol.

There has also been an idea that may be another good solution. Those like treating the fax system as a message switching system. This system does not need real-time data transmissions.

With the process of fax over IP or FoIP, there are a few delays to keep in mind. The standard fax with the traditional telephone service has a T.30 standard. This standard takes into consideration the paper size and fax image details. These protocols have increased in complexity since the beginning of faxing. These timing needs have then come across in the quality of faxing.

With FoIP, there is less sensitivity to the message delay; however, it is more sensitive to network impairments. As with the calls made through VoIP, both the processing and network add delays.

There are also areas that can cause the fax to be dropped. This is the absolute delay in the absence of keep alive mechanisms. Even though there is still a bit of delay in the FoIP, there is as much of a delay of variable delay as in the VoIP systems. Therefore, faxing is many times a bit more reliable than the calling of VoIP. This is due to the process being time stamped and easily reordered.

FoIP is however, more sensitive to packet loss and errors than VoIP is. There has to be an error connection in order to resolve the issues. This would be like a TCP process, however this can be a cause for delay.

Sending a fax with the FoIP service is simple and generally a very affective choice in faxing. Here is how simple it is.

Faxing steps:

  • Enter the fax number of your recipient, or just click on their number in your phone book.

  • Enter the subject of your fax

  • Type your message using your PC keyboard

  • Attach any Windows document you want to send, in the same way you would when sending an e-mail

  • Click on `Send'

It is that easy, and with the limited areas of delay, this new FoIP is a great way to set up and set faxes and a lower price. Therefore saving money overall. Remember that even though there are some hiccups now, this technology has grown dramatically over the last 10 years and will continue to improve. So being a part of this growth will have you in on the best parts.
