Choosing between an inkjet or laser printer

Today when you go to choose a printer, there is a wide variety of choices. You can select a printer, that simply prints, or one that has multiple options, for scanning, faxing and copying. Most importantly you will need to choose between an inkjet or a laser printer. The decision on what type of printer to purchase seems to go both ways. However, if you take the time to do the research, you can find the printer, that will best fit your printing needs. Here is what you need to know about choosing between an inkjet or laser printer-

  • If you do primarily black and white printing-The general consensus is that for large amounts of black and white printing, a laser printer is the way to go. Simply put you will get more pages, for less money, since it is far less expensive to print black and white with a laser printer. In some instances, inkjet printers can cost almost twice as much per page.
  • If you do primarily color printing-The amount of color printing will determine which type of printer is best for you. If you only print color occasionally, then an inkjet printer is fine for that. If you are going to have to print large amounts of color, then you may want to consider getting a laser printer.
  • Upfront cost will be a factor-If you are looking for a cost effective way to print, you need to keep in mind that the toner that is used in laser printers is a lot more expensive, then inkjets, for an inkjet printer. However, the yield from the toner can be as much as 3 times more then from an inkjet. Over time you will spend more money replacing inkjet cartridges.
  • If time is a factor-You shouldn't even consider buying an inkjet printer. Laser printers can print out a page, in about half the time it takes to do the same job on an inkjet printer. This is especially important if you are looking for printers that will be used in a busy office setting that needs their printing done quickly. Having printers that can produce quickly, can save you money and time.
  • Consider the replacement costs-If you are someone who does a large quantity of printing, there is no getting around the fact that laser printers, while more expensive, last longer. If you are using an inkjet printer you need to factor in the replacement costs, since you are more likely to wear it out faster then a laser printer.In addition, if you are one of the minority who rarely uses their printer, it is important to understand that inkjets dry out, if they are unused, for long periods of time.
  • You can multi-task with either type of printer-Today there are many models of printers that are all in one. This means that they can function as a copier, fax machine and a printer. Not to long ago, if you wanted an all in one you had to be satisfied with an inkjet printer. Today, there are many models of laser printers that allow you to have all of these functions as well. Keep in mind though, that you will pay more, for one of these machines, instead of buying just a printer.
  • Consider the overall costs-If you are looking to get a printer, with as small an initial outlay as possible, then an inkjet printer is best for you. If you are looking at a long term cost, then a laser may be the right choice. An inkjet printer is a smaller initial investment, however, you should keep in mind that laser printers, while they have a larger initial investment, are often more cost effective in the long run.
