Direct TV Internet

Direct TV is not just for TV programming anymore. Now, many satellite companies (including Direct TV) offer internet access as part of their services.

Direct TV satellite internet does not use cable lines or phone lines, making it a good choice for people who live in rural areas. Many times, rural areas don't offer cable TV, or they might be too far from a phone company for traditional internet service, which requires either a phone line or cable connection.

Businesses, especially farming communities, coal mines, or other industrial services that are located in rural areas, could also benefit from Direct TV satellite internet. A clear view of the southern sky is required, and rural communities offer this better than a city would.

How Direct TV Internet Works
Direct TV's Internet uses a type of technology called Internet Protocol Multicasting and works by sending data from one single satellite to a number of locations or different satellites at the same time. Up to 5,000 channels can be accessed from just one satellite. The data is compressed, which reduces its size and bandwidth, allowing much more to be sent at the same time. This is different from traditional dial-up internet, which can't send as much information due to bandwidth limitations.

The differences between satellite internet and traditional dial-up or DSL are few. The upload speed of a satellite internet connection is roughly one-tenth of the download speed. As a general rule, cable and DSL internet connections are faster as far as downloading information is concerned, but satellite internet are usually around ten times faster than a traditional modem.

Costs

Satellite internet, no matter what provider you get it from, is generally pretty expensive, much more so than if you were to get internet from a local service provider.

Direct TV offers home-based satellite internet for $99.99 a month for one computer with $0 down. Dial-up satellite internet is much less expensive, only $15 a month. Satellite internet from Direct TV can also be installed on two computers, which raises the price to $109.99 per month with $0 down. Two computers per month is also just $15 a month for dial-up services.
If you don't want to pay that much per month for internet, you can also put $500 down, and with that your monthly payments for satellite internet drop to $59.95 each month for one computer, or $69.99 a month for two with the same amount down.

Direct TV Internet access for businesses is more expensive than for homes, but includes more computers that will have access in the price.

As with any company who competes for business, Direct TV's authorized dealers often have specials for their internet services. This can include rebates, discounts, a certain number of months free, free equipment, and free installation. As with any major purchase, it pays to shop around. Each of Direct TV's authorized dealers operates independently, so they don't all offer the same deals at the same time. However, it's worth waiting for a good deal, as they are always being offered.

Direct TV's Satellite Internet is a good choice for people who can't access the internet via traditional means. In addition, it provides businesses located in rural areas internet access that may not have been available previously.
