To operate a computer a person will need to have an operating system. One of the most popular operating systems is Microsoft Windows XP. But when someone buys a computer they may have to also get their operating system. How do they go about getting and downloading Microsoft Windows XP is they choose this particular operating system? This article talks about important information concerning Microsoft Windows XP.

What is Microsoft Windows XP

Simply put Windows XP is an operating system. It is produced by Microsoft and it is made to be used on personal computers such as business and home desktops or notebook computers. Before Windows XP there were Windows 2000 Professional and Windows Me. It was originally released in 2001. There are two editions, Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional. Windows XP Home Edition is for home computer users, whereas Windows XP Professional is most specifically for business and enterprise and power users. Windows XP Professional offers a few additional features like support for Windows Server domains.

Features of Microsoft Windows XP

Windows XP offers computer users with a lot of features that makes using a computer faster and easier. One such feature is a faster hibernation and start-up sequences. Windows XP also has the ability to allow a particular user to save their information on their desktop and to allow a different user to log in and no information is lost. The "ClearnType" font was designed to help improve the readability of the text on the screen and Windows XP also has the Remote Desktop function to allow computers to connect across a network or even the internet their information such as files, their printer, and other applications.

How to download Microsoft Windows XP

Microsoft has not yet made Windows XP available to download and if or when they do it will not be free. Everyone who wants to have either Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home will need to purchase a copy either from a local store or from an online store. People can purchase Microsoft Windows XP for around $130.00. After a person purchases a copy of Microsoft Windows XP they should follow the directions given on the package and with the CD-ROM to install Microsoft Windows XP on their computer.

Don't try to download Microsoft Windows XP illegally

Though some people are able to get a copy of Windows XP that is downloaded for free, that is illegal. Even if someone was able to get a pirated copy of Windows XP if they were to try to download it, it may not even work. On a legal copy of Windows XP there is a "product key" (an activation code.) Even if someone gets a copy of Windows XP, an exact copy of the image, they do not have the box that they didn't purchase. The product key is printed on the box. Without the product key the person will not be able to install Windows XP. There are probably places that people could illegally get the product key to enable them to install Windows XP, but the product key is supposed to be unique. If the key has been used by someone else then most likely the activation of the illegal copy of Windows XP will not work anyway. The main reason there are activation codes in the first place is to stop people from using the copy of Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home too many times.

The newest version of the operating system

There is now a new version of Microsoft's operating system. This new operating system is called Windows Vista. There are a lot of changes and additional features in this updated operations system such as updated graphical user interface, new searching features, a new multimedia creation tool Windows DVD Maker, and redesigned audio and print sub-systems. One of the main reasons that Windows Vista was created by Microsoft was to increase the overall security in the actual Windows operation system.
