How do I find out who owns an AIM account?

If you're savvy when it comes to the internet, you're probably familiar with AIM. AIM stands for AOL Instant Messenger and is one of the more popular service providers of instant messaging. People can sign up for this service, which is free, and then add friends who also use AIM to their contact lists via their email addresses or AIM usernames. They can create profiles and chat with their friends online real-time.

AIM is a popular service, so chances are good you know many other people who have AIM profiles and AIM accounts as well. But if you want to find other AIM users, doing so can be a little tricky. Privacy laws make it difficult to find people's email addresses, and you can really only find other addresses if the AIM user has registered their account information online. AIM does not publish email addresses unless people give them permission to do so. So someone may have an AIM account, and you may know for a fact they have one, but unless they have registered that information in the directory and made it public, searching in the database will be fruitless.

However, it's worth a try. You can search AOL's database for registered users by doing the following:
1. Go to https://site.aol.com/netfind/emailfinder.adp
2. From there, type in the information of the person you are looking for. The only information that is required is the person's last name, but you can also enter other information for more narrowed results, such as their first name, city or town, state, and country.
3. Your results will display on the next page.

If you didn't get the results you were looking for, it's probably because the person you are searching for did not register their information. AOL's database draws its information from the regular white pages and lists information that is found in the phone book, as well as email addresses or websites if the person has entered in that information themselves.

There are a number of different email search providers on the internet, but their information will be very similar to that of AOL's email search. As a general rule, any website that asks for money to find email addresses is probably a scam, or will provide you with outdated email addresses at best.

AIM profiles and accounts are easy to set up. If you don't have one of these, you can get them for free by visiting the AIM webpage. There is also a link to it from AOL. In order to sign up for AIM or AOL, you will fill in personal information such as your name, birth date, and gender. Then you will choose a username and password and sign a terms of service agreement.

One reason people like AIM is because of the many features it provides other than just instant messaging and mail. Other popular services are chat rooms, which allow you to talk with numerous people at once, and AIM profiles, which let users personalize their chat windows and pages with backgrounds, music, and videos. These services are all free.

Searching for other AIM accounts online can be difficult as a result of privacy laws, but you can find registered users through AOL's email finder.
