How to access your email on someone else's computer

Imagine this: You're at your in-laws' house.Your spouse has just left you home alone with the parents to go hang out with some old friends. You're going crazy with boredom. You want to read your email but you don't know how to access it on their computer. Will somebody please help you!!

Relax. There is a world of options available to you.

First, think. What kind of email do you have? The easiest way to access your email from another computer is to simply set up an account for free email on an internet site. With something like gmail, aol, hotmail, or yahoo (these are just a few common examples) you can check your mail from any computer at any time. They are a great option for just about anyone and offer address books, calendars, and other attractive features. If you plan on traveling away from your personal computer (and don't own a laptop) it probably makes sense for you to register for one of these email accounts. You might also want to consider using a free email account as your personal email, and use your other email for business.

If you don't have an email account located on a free internet server, your options for accessing your email are fewer. While you may want to register for a free account now that you know that they exist and that they are really quite convenient, remember that it won't help you read the email you've already received and stored on your computer.Go ahead and register for one anyway, but you still have the problem of reading your current mail.

One option is to do the following:go to www.mailstart.com and enter your email address and password. It will remotely check up to five email accounts, as well as maintain your address book, calendar, appointments and bookmarks. However, this service comes with a price: $18 per year. They do offer a demonstration where you may type in your address and password to access your email, but you may only access this once a week.

Another option is slightly more complicated but does not cost you anything. To try this method you must have already written down your email configuration and your password. To find this you must open your email program and look for "settings, accounts or options."You will be looking for the POP server name (the POP server is where your email exists).Once you find that, write it down, along with your email address and password.

We now return to your present situation: stuck at your in-laws' and going crazy without access to your email.Assuming that you have the information mentioned in the previous paragraph, you may now be able to access your email after doing the following things.Open up the email program on the computer available to you.Look for the same "settings, accounts or options" that you looked for on your own computer and then wrote down before getting yourself in this email-less situation.

The computer email program may allow you to set up multiple email accounts. If that's the case, simply insert your POP, username and password to access your email. If the computer will not allow you to set up multiple accounts, you'll have to change the email address already on the computer.Just remember to write down your in-laws' information.I'm sure they wouldn't appreciate having no access to their email just because you weren't thoughtful enough to save it for them.

So now you may check you mail as usual. You may also want to delete your email account from off of the computer once you leave. After all, you probably don't want anyone else reading your personal information.Even if they are family.
