Many computer users wonder if they can access their electronic mail (email) from somewhere else than their primary computer. This could be someone looking to access their work email from home or their home email from work.Or perhaps a computer user is looking to access their email from an internet café or perhaps an internet connected system at a hotel where they may be traveling. The answer is yes it is possible to remotely access your email and normally this is fairly straightforward. This article will discuss how to access your hotmail remotely.

The first thing to keep in mind is that just because internet access is available at an organization this does not necessarily mean that you will be able to access your desired account. In many cases (particularly in the commercial world), networks are configured with "firewalls" which place restrictions on what types of network traffic are allowed, and what parts of the Internet can be accessed. If this is the case, you may be able to ask the network support staff at that organization whether they are prepared to allow access for you to your email account.Keep in mind that some organizations ban use of external mail systems so you will need to check their computing regulations. In many cases, the technical support for your email will not be able to assist if methods to access your email remotely fail, particularly if this is due to technical and/or security reasons at the remote site.

Some organizations use proprietary email systems, which, while they will allow you to send and receive Internet email, may not allow you to access your email account directly. If this is the case, and you have an email address on their system, you will probably be able to forward your mail to that address.

Perhaps the most straightforward way of reading and sending email from anywhere with web access is to use a webmail program. While webmail can be convenient for occasional access, as you do not need to install any special software on a computer in order to use it, it can be slow to use and is not as powerful as a dedicated mail program running on your own computer. There are several different types of dedicated mail programs that can purchased if you so desire.

It is possible to use many different webmail programs to access your email account. You will need to understand the limits of the support that is offered in accessing email remotely.

Computer experts recommend making sure you are extremely comfortable in using your program of choice since you are working to insure your privacy. It is important to understand that if you lose messages or corrupt folders your webmail program may not be able to help you recover them due to network system constrants.

Sometimes computer users are looking for a POP3 mail server. It is possible to configure your Hotmail account to collect mail from POP3 servers. You must be working on a network that will provide access to mailboxes via the POP3 protocol. But it is important to know thatPOP3 is an older and much less functional mail access protocol. Many networks do not support POP3.It is recommended that you use a webmail program or forward your email before using a POP3 mail server.

Many times it is simply easier to forward your email to whereever it is most easily accessible to you. Forwarding your email eliminates the need to have to access through computer security and firewalls and will simply give you access to your email whenever you need it. Another benefit to this is that you can easily discontinue the forwarding of your email should circumstances change or warrant it.
