How to choose an ISP

These days, it's next to impossible to get things done without a computer and access to the internet.Work, school, and even social obligations all require that we get online, at least to send emails and look up information. But with so many Internet Service Providers (ISP) available to you, how can you possibly decide which one to choose?Keep reading and learn just how to choose an ISP.

First, what is an ISP?An internet service provider is a business that provides customers with access to the internet. In the past, ISPs were run by telephone companies. But today, ISPs can be started by anyone with enough money and expertise. They offer access to the internet through a variety of technologies, including dial-up, DSL, or wireless.Internet service providers may provide a combination of services including Internet transit, domain name registration and hosting, and web hosting.

Now here's how to choose an ISP.
1. Determine what you want. Are you just getting the internet to send and receive email, and maybe surf the web once in a while?Or do you want to do more technical things? If you just want to send email, a dial-up account (which uses a phone line) may be enough. But if you're impatient with a slow connection (dial-up connections are frequently slow; plus, dial-up ties up your phone lines to incoming calls), or want to download files, or play games, you'll want a DSL or cable connection.
2. Find out what kind of hardware you need to get.If you're going for dial-up, you need a modem. You can buy them at any computer store. If you're going with dial-up, be sure that the ISP has a local access number so that your phone won't be charged for long distance connections.DSL or cable connections require a network interface, or Ethernet connection.
3. It's always a good idea to ask around before making a decision.Find out what your friends and family use for internet service.Ask them if they're satisfied with it.It's best to get local opinions though, since customer service varies from area to area.
4. If you decide to go with DSL, ask the providers about package deals. Many cable companies offer discounts for internet and cable TV.But be sure you understand the details of the deal. Many cable companies offer great deals for the first few months and then rip you off after 6 months, and then you're already stuck in a contract.Just be sure you know what you're getting.
5. Once you've chosen the type of provider you prefer, you're almost ready to go.If you go with dial-up and you have a modem already, it's as easy as doing some "paperwork" online with your provider. If you go with DSL or cable, a technician will usually come to your house to install it.And before you know it, you'll be surfing the web!

A few things to be aware of:
- If you have several computers that you want to access the internet on, you can get a broadband connection. All you have to do is set up a network for the computers to share.Ask your ISP about it.
- If you choose DSL or a cable connection, be aware that your computer is always connected to the internet (unless you purposely turn it off). This makes you slightly vulnerable to spies and snoopers.Get some good firewall software and virus protection.

Once you've chosen an ISP you will be able to access the internet any time you want. And that kind of freedom is worth doing a little research for.So be sure that you closely examine the ISP you're thinking of choosing before you decide.
