How to get your digital video edited
The first step of digital video editing capturing the digital information into the computer. This is done in one of two ways: with a firewire capture card via firewire cable, or a USB 2.0 card via a USB 2.0 cable. Hook the camera up to a computer with one of these wires and open up the capture program of editing software of your choice. Windows Movie Maker does a fine job and it's free. Once the video is on the computer, now its time to rock and roll. If the video is a huge chunk, it can be hard to work within the editing time line. The video needs to split up into clips so they can be organized and easily accessed. If you didn't know about it before, most capture programs will automatically sense scene changes and will split the video up into little chunks. But if you didn't do that while you were capturing the video, then you are going to have to deal with the situation as it is. It'll be harder, but it'll teach you a good lesson for next time. After your video is split up into nice little chunks, start organizing them into an order that makes the most sense to the theme of the overall project you have in mind. Between these clips you can put special transitional effects such as wipes, fades, and other cool effects to add interest to your project. At this point it is also prudent to make final tweaks to the length of the clips. Once all of this is in line, you can start getting a little more fancy. Titling effects can be a fun way to add dates, names of family members, or just add funny comment to your video so that the audience won't be confused or maybe just make them laugh a little harder at the shot of uncle Jim ripping out his pants break dancing with the cousins. There are literally thousands of fonts that are already on the computer and can be downloaded off of the internet. It would be hard to run out of fun ideas with the titling capabilities of the software. The final touch to any good video is the soundtrack. Plug in a microphone and narrate a little bit. But just putting together a list of songs to run over the top can be just as cool too. Maybe play "Cool Jerk" when the camera is on a relative you want to jab, or put "You Are So Beautiful" when the good old wife shows up onto the screen. She defiantly won't hate you for the thought. Whatever you choose to do, taking the digital video and spicing it up a wee bit can make a fun evening at family get-togethers. If you decide to become more serious about video making, the only thing that hinders those movies from getting better is your imagination. Have fun, and don't give up!
