How to save digital photos

There are several different methods used to store digital photos. Some of the common methods are:

  • Using a memory card to store digital photos. This method is used to store photos as you shoot them. For most people, using a memory card is only a temporary method used to store photos, but if you rarely take pictures and if you shoot images at a low setting, you may be able to keep your pictures on the memory card until you run out of space.
  • The hard drive is commonly where most people store the bulk of their images. This is a good option but does have its problems. For instance, if your hard drive becomes infected with a virus, you may lose your images. Do use the hard drive, but back up all images as you transfer them to a hard drive using a secondary method, which you may find a secondary method listed below.
  • Printing images may be considered another method of saving them. Never use this as the only method because a scanned photo print will always have far less quality than the original image on file. Printing images is an easy way to quickly see what the images look like, but prints are prone to several different kinds of potential damage from water, heat, and light.
  • The compact disc is a great way to store images. It is efficient and it is also relatively easy to set up. The down side is you need a CD-burner to use this method to store images. If you already have a CD-burner, you can simply keep a running backup of your images. When you burn images to a compact disc write down the dates and descriptions of the photos on the CD, this will help in keeping the photos organized so you don't have to look at several different CD's to find a particular photo that you are looking for.
  • The DVD may be an even better method of storing your photos. You can probably store all your images on just one disc. If you have a DVD burner, purchase a rewritable DVD and just keep adding your image files to the DVD. You may want to organize these files before adding them to the DVD, to help with finding images later.
  • Online storage can also be a great way to store images. There are many sites that offer this service, but there are sometimes limits to image file sizes. Online storage is a great way to share images with friends and family and avoids having to e-mail large image files.
No matter what method you choose to store your digital photos remember to always have batteries that are completely charged in your digital camera before downloading photos to your computer. If the batteries die during the transfer, you can damage the memory card and you may also lose your photos. You should reformat your card each time after downloading and saving all the pictures on your computer. Don't use the computer to delete the photos or to format the card. Do not ever remove the memory card from the camera while the camera is turned on. This may damage the card. If you have a problem with the memory card, stop using it immediately. Use an image recovery program to try and recover the images on the card before you do anything else. And always be careful when using the "delete all" option on your digital camera. Don't let people who are not familiar with your digital camera to play with it, at least until you have downloaded you photos, they may accidentally delete them.
