Night shots using digital video

The main time to think about taking night video is when purchasing your digital video camcorder. Some video cameras are just better at shooting at night or in low-light conditions.Others offer what amounts to an automatic flash because the LCD screen can light up at night. One of the considerations you will want to make when buying your camera is how it does at night.Another you will want to make is what kind of lighting accessories are available for your camera. No matter what camera you buy, here are a few things that you can do to improve your nighttime videos.

Shoot with a wide angle lens-the way your camera works, the wider the angle of your shot, the less focusing you will have to do.Part of the problem with night shots is that it is hard for the camera to focus when it can't pick up the details to focus on.By using a wide-angle lens or a wide-angle setting, you will be focusing on the entire scene and there won't be any need to be any focusing on objects.

Don't use the optical zoom-this is closely related to using the wide-angle lens. When you increase the focal length of your effectively reduce the size of you lens.Doing this allows less light to enter the camera; your shot will be dark and the details will be lost.If you absolutely have to zoom at night, use the digital zoom.Using the digital zoom does not change the focal length on your lens and the amount of light entering the camera will be the same.

Bring in artificial light-the light that you have on your camera will only be able to illuminate the area close to your camera. This will be fine if you are doing a nighttime interview but if you want to capture a scene, you will want to use artificial light. It's a good idea to use both outside lighting and the light on your camera, this will create a nice effect where the subject is crisp and easy to see and the background is still available to fill in the natural scene.

If you are using artificial light, you might need to use a diffusion lens to reduce the impact of that light. When the background is dark and one bright light is shining on your subject, it can create a washed out effect.Using a diffusion lens will modulate the harshness of the artificial light and can result in a soft, almost romantic, lighting effect.

Turn off the auto focus-the darker it gets, the less you should depend on the automatic features on your camera. In the dark, the camera is easy to "confuse" and you will find that the automatic focus is often out of focus. To do a manual focus in the dark, zoom in, set the focus, and then zoom back out to take the actual picture. This technique is the best way to get in-focus shots in low-light conditions.

Use the night to create night-shots-no matter how good your camera is or how skilled you are at using it, night shots will still be different from day shots.Instead of trying to create well-lit shot when you are shooting at night, go ahead and create darker shots at night.By using ambient lighting and by creating pools of light in the dark background you will be able to create some cinematic effects that you wouldn't be able to create if you didn't have the benefit of darkness.Use the darkness as a prop to create exciting night shots and save the other kinds of shots for the day.
