What is podcasting?
Podcasting is a new way for people to communicate with each other. Podcasting can be used in any type of setting, whether you are looking to communicate with your friends, deliver lectures to an online class, or want to promote your business. Podcasting is really very simple, all that podcasting consists of is a downloadable audio file. This file can be of anything from kids goofing off to a professional podcast with someone giving a speech, but it will have added sound effects or even theme music. Podcasting is a new way to get out any type of message.

Who can use podcasting?
The great thing about podcasting is that it can be used by anyone. Podcasts are extremely universal they can range from a few minutes to a half an hour. Podcasts can also be in any format that you choose, such as a talk show, a lecture, or you can use them to provide guided tours through museums or other places. Podcasts can also be used for marketing purposes or educational purposes. So don't be afraid to get creative with creating your podcast.

Making a podcast:
One of the best things about podcasting is that making and creating a podcast is really simple. In fact it is just as easy as making and creating secure content for your blog and making it available through an RSS feed. Once you know what you want to convey to your users podcasts can be made using software that will create it for you. This software can be purchased or you can find software online that is free to users. The great thing about a podcast is that once you have created the podcast all your potential users have to do is click on a link to download the podcast. Once clicking on the link the podcast can be downloaded to an MP3 player, iPod, a computer, or they can simply listen to the podcast through your website.

Creating a podcast:
Depending on what you are going to be doing a podcast for you might want to take a few seconds to think about what you want to create. If you are just creating a podcast for your friends to pass the time some of these tips might also come in handy. Here are some things to think about when creating a podcast, especially if you are using a podcast for PR purposes.

  • Revisit your PR plan - you are going to want to make sure that a podcast will fit in with your plan to send certain messages to your customers.
  • Plan to succeed - here you are going to want to figure out what kind of message you are going to send out, how often you are going to podcast, what will be the podcast format, etc.
  • Differentiate - how are you going to make your podcast different from others so that it stands out in the crowd?
  • Get permission - if you are going to use other people's content, such as music or artwork, get their permission before you create your podcast. Also if you are going to use guest speakers book them ahead of time.
  • Produce - make sure you have at least five practice runs with podcasts behind your final podcast so that you can use trial by error to work out the problems before your final version is made available.

After you create the podcast:
After you have created your podcast you are going to have to get people to listen to that. But this becomes a problem because how can your customers or potential customers or friends listen to something that they don't even know exists. The answer here is rather simple, after creating your podcast you will need to list it on numerous podcast directories, as well as a link to your podcast on your personal or professional website.
