When we watch movies or television shows the manner in which the film is taped and edited seems so effortless. Yet when we amateurs go out and try to film a simple home video we cannot even do that half way decently. What is so hard about video taping?Well, just like anything in life practice makes perfect.Of course a couple of handy gadgets and some advice do not hurt.Digital video recorders open up a whole new world of possibilities that were not present for use when we had just the traditional camcorders. Some of us just need a little help.

Below you will find some tips from professionals on how you can shoot better digital video footage.By following these and other suggestions, you are guaranteed to at least make improvements even if you aren't hired to film Hollywood's next big blockbuster.

Edit, edit, edit

One of the biggest advantages to having a digital video recorder or camcorder in the first place is that it allows you to be able to edit your material. The only way that you can edit your material is if you have enough film to be able to afford to cut some of it away.Professionals say that for every 5 hours of film you can expect to edit away 4 hours in order to be left with the very best shots possible. When we film we need to remember that the more recorded material that we have to work with the more options will be available to us.

Tripod

You are probably aware of the fact that a tripod is the best way to ensure that you have a steady shot. However, your subjects are always moving and a stationary tripod may not be able to capture all the angles and locations that you want to capture in the frame. When your scene does not allow for a stationary tripod, consider using your body instead. If you choose to hand hold your camcorder, anchor your elbows on your chest (or gut) and have the finder against your eye. Think three points of contact, just like a tripod.

Lens cap obstruction

Nothing is worse than to be recording a precious memory and to have your lens cap fly up into the view finder and ruin the frame.A good way to keep your lens cap close by and out of the way is to attach it to the side of the camera with a little Velcro.

Experiment

A lot of digital video fun comes in experimenting.Try filming something in a way that you have never done before.Don't be afraid of doing something out of the ordinary, after all you can simply edit that portion out if you do not like it.Or, you may find a filming technique that you really like.

Tell a story

You know you have made a great home video if you can play it back later, know exactly what is happening, and not become bored with it.You need to capture the key points of why what you are filming is going to be worth watching later.Capture the whole story of the moment that you are trying to capture.

What did you say?

With digital video the picture is only half of the equation. If your audio is bad then people aren't going to able to enjoy your fabulous filming skills.Sometimes the onboard microphones that are found on camcorders just don't do the job.Do not rule out the possibility of using an accessory microphone to get the sound quality that you are looking for.Accessory microphones are usually sold by the camcorder manufacturer and should not be too difficult to find.
