What are the pros and cons of digital video? Digital video is a great technology that has been able to bring us a ton of benefits in the video world. However as with anything, there are both pros and cons involved. Here is a brief review of those pros and cons.

Pros

  1. Image quality: The image quality of digital video is out of this world. You can see small details, crisp pictures, and amazing colors. This happens because of the higher resolution range, and frame rate speed.
  2. Prices are dropping. As with many other new technical devices. The prices are a little higher than that of a VCR. However, the prices are lower now, the technology is getting better. So as time goes by, the prices will be even lower, and the product will be even better. This is the same for digital camera products.
  3. Reliability. These DVR systems are becoming more and more reliable. This is due to the extensive testing that occurs. Even the digital cameras, are following in suit.
  4. Affordability. The goal for digital video designers was that all people could and would have these products in their home. Therefore the prices had to range to meet as many financial income levels as possible. This is the case, you can purchase a digital camera for less than $100 and the same holds true for the DVR systems themselves. Of course the prices go up with benefits. Though, it is still very affordable to get started using digital video.
  5. Ease of use. This is very important, because so many of us just missed the bus, for technical devices. With this in mind the designers have made these products easy to use, set up and manage. If there are questions, there are great support systems in place. The user manuals are usually easy to understand and follow. They have great help and support teams set up for questions. And often times the system itself has a help and support system.
  6. Storage room. The more hard drive space your DVR has, the more video you can capture. This also is the situation for the digital camera, and camcorders. They have the ability to hold much more room than that of an analog system. In fact as far as the hard drive space goes for a digital recorder, you can usually get at least 40 hours of record ability, even with the lower priced systems. However, on the high end, you can be looking up to 500 hours.

Ok, now that we can see there are multiple pros, or benefits. It is time to look at the cons.

Cons

  1. Price. Even though these systems are dropping in price, they are not yet to the VCR price. VCRs can be purchase now around $25 for an inexpensive one. These are not there. There are also costs for adapters, and accessories to take into consideration.
  2. Older television sets may have some problems with the connectivity. Many of the older television sets have a single coaxial cable input. These will not accommodate a DVD or DVR system. So you would need to purchase accessories for this.
  3. You cannot run the DVD or DVR through your VCR. This is because the DVDs and DVRs often times have copy guard functions.

For the most part this great technology of digital video has much more to offer, than any of the cons that are involved. However, keep in mind that with any new thing, there is a cost for learning, and upgrades. These are the pros and cons of digital video. Now it is up to you, to see how far you want to go with it.
