Satellite TV: Directv Satellite Receiver

Satellite television has become a very popular way to access the hundreds of channels and broadcast information not available on traditional TV.Satellite TV is delivered via communications satellites, and is available through a variety of direct broadcast satellite companies on a subscription basis.

One of these companies is DirecTV. When a person subscribes to DirecTV's satellite television services, a small satellite dish is installed on their house and they receive at least one satellite receiver. A satellite receiver is a machine that makes viewing channels and information possible. DirecTV subscription packages can be upgraded to provide as many as 4 satellite receivers for multiple rooms.

The Satellite Receiver
DirecTV offers several varieties of satellite receivers which are installed in the home next to a person's DVD and/or VCR players and their TV. These available receivers are:- DirecTV Standard Receiver;

  • DirecTV DVR;

  • DirecTV HD Receiver;

  • DirecTV HD DVR.


The Standard Receiver

The Standard Receiver is the basic receiver that comes with a typical satellite TV subscription. This type of receiver features:

  • Access to over 250 channels;
  • A customizable on-screen program guide;
  • DirecTV Active, a personalized information feature that allows the subscriber to receive personalized information such as local weather updates, horoscopes, lottery results, pay-per-view suggestions;
  • Mix Channels, certain channels that contain 6 channels;
  • Mini-Guide, a small, on-screen guide that shows one channel at a time;
  • Parental controls;
  • Programming options such as international language packages, pay-per-view, and XM satellite radio channels.
The Standard Receiver can be upgraded, with an increase in subscription fees, to one of the following receivers: DirecTV DVR Receiver The DirecTV DVR service is an additional monthly fee, but features more options and convenience than the conventional receiver. The DVR Receiver:
  • Records favorite TV shows automatically and stores them for later viewing. The TV shows can be recorded while viewing other TV programs;
  • Updates itself should show schedules change;
  • Allows the user to exclude reruns and only record new shows;
  • Allows the user to pause, rewind, and use slow motion on TV shows;
  • Allows the user to pause, rewind, and fast-forward recorded TV shows;
  • Features interactive and personalized information and menus;
  • Allows the user to "bookmark" a TV program at a certain spot, then later return to that spot quickly;
  • Features on-screen Caller ID;
  • Features parental controls.
DirecTV HD Receiver DirecTV HD receivers function with HD-capable televisions for superior picture quality. HD stands for "high-definition". HD-televisions feature higher quality imaging than traditional televisions and usually broadcast programs in wide-screen format, possibly accompanied by digital surround sound. The HD receivers allow HDTV owners to:
  • View programs with increased picture, color, and pixel quality;
  • Improve their viewing experiences with digital surround sound;
  • Access HD channels;
  • Use the Advanced Program Guide feature for ease of channel access.


DirecTV HD DVR Receiver

The very popular HD DVR Receiver combines the features of the DVR receiver and the HD receiver for more options and access. This receiver offers:

  • Additional storage for saved and recorded programs;
  • The ability to record HD programs in addition to standard programs;
  • The ability to record multiple shows while watching another;
  • The convenience of 14-day channel guides;
  • All of the features of the DVR receiver, including the ability to pause, rewind, and fast-forward TV shows, parental controls, personalized DirecTV Active Channel, and on-screen Caller ID.

All of these DirecTV satellite receivers are installed by professional installers for the subscriber. The DirecTV installer will also give the subscriber a brief introduction on the use of the satellite receiver, and provide him or her with a detailed instruction manual and remote control.
Some of these receivers may require an additional monthly subscription fee.
