Satellite television has become one of the most popular ways to watch TV. Accessing hundreds of TV channels via cable networks has become dated, as satellite television technologies have advanced, allowing viewers to have more convenience, options, and reliability.

DirecTV is one of several direct broadcast satellite providers; providers which cater to households. DirecTV offers subscribers access to hundreds of channels and broadcast information, including access to XM Satellite Radio. When a person subscribes to DirecTV, they are able to build their own satellite television system. A DirecTV system incorporates the complete DirecTV package: the programming, or channels, package; satellite receiver; and any additional options.

Creating a DirecTV System is a multi-step process easily done on the DirecTV website.

Step 1: Programming Packages
Channel packages dictate what channels a subscriber has access to and may include special channel features. Each package will vary in monthly cost, but typically range from $29.99 a month to $86.99 a month for a one-year subscription. The Programming packages include:

  • Total Choice: 155 channels and 50 XM Satellite Radio channels;

  • Total Choice Plus: 185 channels and 67 XM Satellite Radio channels;

  • Total Choice Premier: 250 channels, premium movie channels, and sports networks;

  • Family Choice: Parental controls and 40 children's channels.

Some of these packages include DVR service, which is the ability to pause, rewind, or record television shows.

Step 2: The Satellite Receiver
The satellite receiver, in addition to the satellite dish, is what makes viewing satellite TV possible. These machines hook up to a television, allowing access to channels and broadcast information, and usually feature the added benefit if interactive menus. There are 4 types of DirecTV satellite receivers, each varying in price:

  • DirecTV Standard Receiver;
  • DirecTV DVR;
  • DirecTV HD Receiver;
  • DirecTV HD DVR.
The Standard Receiver The Standard Receiver is the basic receiver that comes with a typical satellite TV subscription. This type of receiver features:
  • Access to over 250 channels;
  • A customizable on-screen program guide;
  • DirecTV Active, a personalized information feature that allows the subscriber to receive personalized information such as local weather updates, horoscopes, lottery results, pay-per-view suggestions;
  • Mix Channels, certain channels that contain 6 channels;
  • Mini-Guide, a small, on-screen guide that shows one channel at a time;
  • Parental controls;
  • Programming options such as international language packages, pay-per-view, and XM satellite radio channels.
DirecTV DVR Receiver
  • Records favorite TV shows automatically and stores them for later viewing. The TV shows can be recorded while viewing other TV programs;
  • Updates itself should show schedules change;
  • Allows the user to exclude reruns and only record new shows;
  • Allows the user to pause, rewind, and use slow motion on TV shows;
  • Allows the user to pause, rewind, and fast-forward recorded TV shows;
  • Features interactive and personalized information and menus;
  • Allows the user to "bookmark" a TV program at a certain spot, then later return to that spot quickly;
  • Features on-screen Caller ID;
  • Features parental controls.
DirecTV HD Receiver Functions with HD-capable televisions for superior picture quality and allows HDTV owners to:
  • View programs with increased picture, color, and pixel quality;
  • Improve their viewing experiences with digital surround sound;
  • Access HD channels;
  • Use the Advanced Program Guide feature for ease of channel access.

DirecTV HD DVR Receiver

This receiver offers:

  • Additional storage for saved and recorded programs;
  • The ability to record HD programs in addition to standard programs;
  • The ability to record multiple shows while watching another;
  • The convenience of 14-day channel guides;
  • All of the features of the DVR receiver, including the ability to pause, rewind, and fast-forward TV shows, parental controls, personalized DirecTV Active Channel, and on-screen Caller ID.
Step 3: Summary and Additional Options Subscribers now have the option to pay for their custom system, or add additional channels or programs which pertain to the type of package the subscriber chose. These options include:
  • Additional channels for an additional fee;
  • Sports Subscriptions, which feature viewing access to a wide variety of sporting events;
  • International Programming, which allow the subscriber to access international channels. For example, the Jadeworld package allows access to popular Chinese television programs. Other packages allow foreign language channels and audio.
  • A subscription to DirecTV magazine.

After any additional selections have been made, the subscriber is presented with a monthly total. They may save their DirecTV system options and return later, or purchase their custom system. Subscribers will be required to register by creating a Username and password. They may then place their order, confirm the order, and set an installation date. DirecTV installers will visit the subscriber's home and install the DirecTV satellite dish and satellite receiver, and give the subscriber a brief introduction to the use of their new satellite TV service.
