With advances in satellite technology, the past decades have seen huge surges in the popularity of satellite TV as a means of home entertainment, far overshadowing other options such as cable. In addition to satellite TV, more and more households are finding the advantages of HD television. Also referred to as high definition or high definition television, consumers searching for satellite TV subscriptions will be pleased to find options to accompany their HD (high definition) entertainment.

HD
HD is also referred to as high definition. High definition, or HD, is a type of technology that was introduced in the early 90's. Televisions began to be created using high definition technology, and are referred to now as HDTV's or high definition televisions.
HD television images are made up of tiny dots of color called pixels, much like computer images. The amount of detail, or number of pixels, an HD television image has is determined by its resolution. For example, a high definition television may be advertised as having a resolution of 1280 x 720p, or 1280 x 720 pixels. Higher pixel numbers provide better detail and clarity. High definition technology uses the 16:9 aspect ratio, also known as widescreen, and HD televisions are characterized by their excellent image quality, especially on very large screens, and their accompanying digital surround sound.
This relatively young technology continues to grow in popularity, and satellite TV providers have recognized this. A number of options have been introduced by satellite TV providers options for the HD television owner.

HD Satellite TV

There are two major satellite TV providers: Dish Network and DirecTV. Both companies offer special options for subscribers with HD televisions. These options include:

HD Satellite Receivers
When a person subscribes to a satellite TV provider, they obtain a satellite receiver. Satellite receivers look similar to DVD players or VCR's and provide the means necessary to access satellite TV broadcasting. They are hooked up to the subscriber's television and can be operated with a remote. There are several different types of satellite receivers satellite TV providers offer, each with their own bells and whistles. HD, or high definition, satellite receivers are designed specifically for use with HD televisions. The features of a HD satellite receiver include:

  • The ability to view shows with 10 times the picture clarity of a traditional television;
  • Digital surround sound;
  • Access to special HD channels;

Some HD satellite receivers also feature:

  • The ability to record both standard programming and HD programming;
  • The ability to pause and rewind live TV;
  • The ability to pause, rewind, fast-forward, and use slow motion with recorded shows;
  • The ability to record multiple TV shows while watching another;
  • On screen caller ID;
  • Parental controls.

Some satellite TV receivers designed for use with HD televisions may require an additional cost and possibly software downloads in order to operate.

HD Satellite Channels
Understanding the increase in demand for the superior picture quality HD technology provides, satellite providers began offering special HD channels. HD channels are specially formatted for use with high definition TV, so television shows and movies previously watched on a standard TV can now be viewed with heightened clarity, detail, and realism. The stunning picture quality HD satellite channels provide means viewers can enjoy special programs in the widescreen aspect ration without forsaking quality, and can see greatly enhanced detail. Both DirecTV and Dish Network offer HD satellite channels.
These HD channels are available in program packages and may cost an additional monthly subscription fees. HD satellite channel options include:

  • Complete packages, which feature a variety of HD channels in addition to standard satellite channels. Up to 30 HD channels may be provided with Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum packages;
  • Pay-per-view HD. Allows subscribers to purchase HD shows and movies individually;
  • HD sports packages;
  • Local HD channels packages;
  • Premium HD channel packages;

HD satellite can be purchased with standard satellite television channels, depending on the satellite TV provider.
